PMD Forecasts Light Snow and Rain Across Northern Pakistan — Travel Disruptions Expected

392

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather forecast predicting light rain and mountain snowfall across northern Pakistan today. Commuters are advised to prepare for possible travel disruptions, particularly in high-altitude and fog-prone regions.

A weak westerly wave moving across the region will bring mostly cloudy skies. Light rain and snowfall are expected in isolated parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and the upper reaches of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Affected districts include Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, and Battagram.

In contrast, the plains of Punjab and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to experience dense smog and fog, particularly during the night and early morning. Cities such as Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, and Faisalabad are likely to be affected.

Traffic and Travel Impacts:

  • Mountain Roads Risky: Snowfall in mountainous areas, particularly around Babusar Pass, may cause slippery roads or closures. Travelers should expect delays or road closures.
  • Poor Visibility: Dense fog and smog in the plains will reduce visibility, particularly during early morning and night, increasing the risk of accidents on highways and intercity roads.
  • Cold Hazards: A drop in temperatures (1–3°C) in higher areas adds to risks for both drivers and pedestrians, especially those unfamiliar with winter road conditions.

Advisory for Commuters and Travelers:

  • Avoid non-essential travel through high-altitude mountain passes today, particularly around Babusar Pass. Before traveling, check with local authorities for the latest road status and closures.
  • If traveling in foggy areas of Punjab or KP, drive slowly, keep headlights on, maintain a safe distance, and use fog lights if available.
  • Motorcyclists, pedestrians, and vulnerable travelers should exercise extra caution due to slippery or low-visibility conditions.
  • For long-distance travel in northern areas, consider postponing trips until weather conditions stabilize.

Bottom Line:

Commuters in northern and central Pakistan should prepare for challenging conditions today, with light snowfall in the mountains and dense fog in the plains. Whether traveling through mountain passes or fog-prone areas, exercise caution and stay updated on weather and road conditions.
