Punjab Government Fixes Official Cars And Fuel Quotas For Police Officers

The Punjab government has officially rolled out the Punjab Transport Policy 2026. The new rules strictly define who gets to drive what, cap fuel consumption, and order the immediate retrieval of all surplus or extra vehicles currently sitting in police garages.

Who Drives What? Here is the Engine Wise Breakdown

According to reports, the DIG Telecommunication and Transport has instructed the Motor Transport (MT) wing to implement these rules immediately. 

The policy strictly binds engine displacement (cc) and fuel limits to an officer’s rank:

• Inspector General (IG) Punjab:
  • Official Duties: Entitled to one heavy-duty 2,800 cc vehicle (think Toyota Fortuner or Hilux Revo) with 500 liters of fuel per month.
  • Out-of-Station Visits: Allowed to upgrade to a massive 4,700cc cruiser with additional fuel as per actual travel needs.
  • Personal Use: Gets a separate 1,800cc car with a 300-liter fuel cap.
• Additional IGs (Grade 21): Will receive a 2,800cc machine for official traveling, alongside an 1,800cc ride and 250 liters of fuel for personal use.
• DIGs (Grade 20): Downsized to a 1,500cc official car paired with 250 liters of fuel.
• SSPs (Grade 18): Entitled to a 1,500cc official vehicle and 200 liters of fuel.
• RPOs, DPOs, and DSPs: Their vehicle allotments and fuel ceilings are strictly tied to specific budgetary limits cleared by the Finance Department.

Police officers have been ordered to immediately surrender any extra government vehicles parked at their residences or offices that exceed these newly authorized limits. Furthermore, any vehicles borrowed for ‘departmental projects’ are being snatched back and returned to their original parent departments.
