Every new vehicle purchased in Punjab will now have to be registered in the province before it is handed over to the buyer, according to instructions issued by Punjab Excise Director General Umar Sher Chatha.
As per reports, car manufacturers and motor registration branches have been directed to ensure that vehicles sold in Punjab are delivered only after the registration process has been completed. The move is intended to bring more dealerships under the Dealer Vehicle Registration System and reduce the need for buyers to visit excise offices separately.
Dealers to Register Vehicles for Buyers
Under the new arrangement, manufacturers will provide lists of their authorized dealerships to the relevant motor branches.
Dealers will then be issued licenses under the Dealer Vehicle Registration System, commonly known as DVRS. Vehicles purchased using a Punjab CNIC will be registered by the concerned dealership before delivery to the customer.
The Excise Department plans to begin issuing additional DVRS licenses once it receives the dealership lists from manufacturers.
102 Dealers Already Offering Registration
According to the report, 102 dealerships across Punjab, including Lahore, currently hold DVRS licenses and provide vehicle-registration services.
These dealers charge a service fee of Rs. 2,000 for each registration. The department is also considering a minor increase in the fee to improve the system’s effectiveness and transparency.
The instructions were issued during a meeting between the Punjab Excise DG, representatives of car manufacturers, and directors of motor branches.
For buyers, the measure could simplify the purchase process by allowing registration to be completed at the dealership. However, the speed of implementation will depend on how quickly more authorized dealers receive DVRS licenses.
