Last year, the Punjab government launched universal number plates across the province. Punjab Excise Taxation and Narcotics Control (ET&NC) Department hosted an online auction for the public to get the universal number plate of their choice from the comfort of their homes. Thousands of vehicle owners participated in the e-auction and acquired lucky number plates for their vehicles. The auction is back this year and the biddings start tomorrow, on the 3rd of March, 2021.
Online registrations are open on the e-auction portal on the Punjab ET&NC Department’s official website. Biddings for universal number plates will start from tomorrow and will continue for a month. What are Universal Number Plates? What are the benefits?
Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) collaborated with Punjab Excise and Taxation Department and introduced universal number plates for cars and motorcycles on the 17th of August, 2020. The Excise Department ended the city-wise number plates serials, like LEA, RN, BW, and MA. To break off the distinction between different cities, new “universal” serials were introduced for the entire province.
The step was in the right direction as it shifted the number plates from city-centric to province-centric. Vehicle owners no longer need to visit the regional ET&NC branches for the vehicle registration process. They can get a universal number plate from any ET&NC branch in Punjab.
The introduction of these number plates also put an end to the resale value conflict of cars in Punjab. Cars with Lahore number plates used to have a higher resale value compared to cars from other cities. Now, with universal number plates for the whole province, all cars have equal resale value.
