The Punjab government is preparing to launch an app-based electric bike rental service in Lahore, with 10,000 e-bikes and 300 docking and charging stations planned in the first phase, Housing, Urban Development, and Public Health Engineering Department Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal announced during a meeting in Lahore on Monday.
Built for Short City Trips
The project is being developed under Punjab’s Green Mobility Program. Officials say the rental e-bikes will make short travel easier in Lahore by connecting homes, offices, markets, and bus or metro stations.
This means people may be able to rent an e-bike for short daily trips instead of relying on rickshaws, petrol bikes, or private cars every time.
App-Based Rental System
Citizens will be able to rent the electric bikes through a mobile application. According to officials, the service is expected to allow users to hire a bike within seconds once the system becomes operational.
Minors will not be allowed to register on the app, and the service is limited to eligible adult users.
300 Charging Stations Planned
Around 300 docking and charging stations will be installed across Lahore in the first phase. These stations are expected to be placed near key residential areas, commercial zones, and public transport hubs.
The PHA will identify and provide land for the stations, while other departments, including Lahore Parking Company, the Transport Department, and Punjab Safe Cities Authority, are also expected to be part of the project.
More Freedom Than Bike Taxis
The project looks useful for people who do not own personal transport and depend on buses, rickshaws, or online bike taxis for daily travel.
Since this is a rental service, users will have more freedom and privacy. They can ride the e-bike themselves rather than sit on a bike taxi.
However, pricing will decide how successful the project becomes. If the rental fee is higher than that of online bike taxis, many people may not use it regularly. But if the fee is lower, it can become a practical option for daily city trips.
The success will also depend on the docking and charging stations. If the nearest station is too far away, the service will not provide relief to the public. For the project to work, stations need to be close to residential areas, markets, offices, colleges, and public transport points across Lahore.
Final Approval Still Pending
The project has not been formally launched yet. Officials said it will require final approval before the service begins.
For now, the plan shows Punjab’s push toward electric mobility, but its real success will depend on rental pricing, app reliability, charging access, and the placement of docking stations across Lahore.
