On Monday, Minister of State for Petroleum Musadik Masood Malik announced that the government of Pakistan will be charging an additional Rs100 for petrol from the affluent in order to provide petrol subsidy to the low-income segments in fuel tariffs.

Malik stated that the government will be making petrol more expensive for the rich and cheaper for the poor by using the higher prices paid by the rich to provide subsidized petrol to the low-income segment. The statement comes a day after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a relief package for the poor, in which a subsidy of Rs50 will be given to them on every liter of petrol.

Malik further elaborated on the subsidy today, stating that PM Shehbaz had ordered the ministry to increase the subsidy to Rs100 and that the rich will be charged Rs100 more while the poor will be charged Rs100 less. The petroleum subsidy program will be implemented within the next six weeks, and the financing for the scheme will be accommodated through the tax rate that the higher-income segment would be paying.

Malik recalled that a similar mechanism had been earlier applied in the gas tariffs as well, under which the bills for the poor were reduced by three times as compared to those of the rich.

In his press conference, Malik emphasized that people who were living in palaces and driving expensive vehicles should pay a fair share for commodities. The government will take from those who have been blessed by God and give it to those who are striving to feed their families. This policy will be reflected in everything else as well, he added.

Another example of jaisay awam waisay huqumran, how on earth a petrol dealer shall define difference between rich and poor? Even people are not aware that eating gutka, driving around girls on a bike without silencer is also qualified as a luxury and the minister is expecting these very people to decide who is rich or who is poor.

It seems to be a political stunt. How on earth they are going to make sure that this is not abused?? What if a rich man hires a motorcyclist to get his petrol? How are they going to make sure that a land cruiser is not booked as a suzuki Mehran etc etc.. Its sketchy..
