SAPM Chairs Meeting on EV Insurance Rate Scheme

In a significant move to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Pakistan, a high-level meeting was held on Thursday, led by the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan. The focus? Tackling insurance costs and making EV financing more accessible and practical for everyday Pakistanis.

Representatives from both insurance and EV manufacturing companies gathered to address some of the key concerns around EV ownership — especially when it comes to insurance. Among the hot topics discussed were the risks of battery theft and the importance of anti-theft security in electric vehicles.

EVs Are Getting Safer

During the meeting, EV manufacturers highlighted the recent advancements in vehicle safety and battery protection. They explained how new technologies — like advanced GPS tracking systems, stronger locking mechanisms, and tamper-proof battery designs — have made today’s electric vehicles much more secure.

One important point raised was that lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in EVs, are not only safer for Pakistan’s weather conditions but are also environmentally friendly. Manufacturers emphasized that concerns around battery theft, a major hurdle in the past, are now largely under control thanks to these upgrades.

SAPM Haroon Akhtar Khan directed insurance companies to submit separate and detailed insurance rate proposals for electric motorcycles, rickshaws, and cars by Tuesday. His message was clear: the insurance must be affordable and consumer-friendly.

He assured the attendees that the government would choose the most competitive and beneficial insurance packages for the public. The ultimate goal is to remove financial roadblocks for people who want to switch to electric vehicles.

A Greener Vision for Pakistan

Reiterating the government’s commitment to clean energy and environmental protection, Haroon Akhtar Khan said that under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision, promoting EVs is a top priority.

“Electric vehicles will play a significant role in reducing environmental pollution in Pakistan,” he said.

This meeting marked another important step toward turning the National Electric Vehicle Policy into a practical reality. With the government, insurers, and manufacturers working together, there is hope that EVs will soon become a more accessible and attractive option for Pakistanis across the country.

Affordable insurance is key to making electric vehicles mainstream in Pakistan. Thanks to this proactive dialogue between the public and private sectors, we’re now closer to a cleaner, greener transportation future.
