Severe Smog Limits Motorway Travel in Punjab

Dense smog enveloping major highways in Punjab has led to hazardous driving conditions and multiple motorway accidents. To ensure public safety, the Motorway Police has implemented temporary closures on key routes, including sections of the M2, M3, and M4 motorways.

The decision to close these routes was made due to significantly reduced visibility, particularly during early morning and late evening hours. Authorities are urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel during these periods and to exercise extreme caution if they must drive.

Motorway Police have advised drivers to use both front and rear fog lights to increase visibility. Additionally, it is recommended to travel during daylight hours when visibility is better.

A recent accident near the Hiran Minar Interchange in Sheikhupura, caused by low visibility, resulted in injuries to five people. This incident underscores the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and avoiding travel during foggy conditions.

Precautions for Safe Travel

Limit Travel: If possible, avoid traveling during heavy smog. Plan trips for midday or early afternoon when visibility may improve slightly due to sunlight.

Use Fog Lights: Ensure both front and rear fog lights are on. These lights are essential for making your vehicle visible to others in low-visibility conditions, helping reduce the risk of collisions.

Reduce Speed and Increase Distance: Drive slowly and maintain a larger-than-usual following distance. Low visibility can make it harder to see and react to other vehicles, so giving yourself extra time to stop is crucial.

Avoid Lane Changes: Stay in your lane as much as possible, as frequent lane changes increase the risk of side-impact collisions in low visibility.

Ensure Vehicle Condition: Keep windows, mirrors, and windshields clean to maximize visibility. Confirm that wipers, headlights, and defoggers are functioning properly before starting your journey.

By following these safety tips, drivers can mitigate risks during smoggy weather. The priority is always safety—it’s wiser to delay your trip than to risk driving in hazardous conditions.
