Sindh to Cut E-Challan Fines After Public Pressure
Karachi: The Sindh government is planning a major reduction in the fines imposed by its new AI-powered e-ticketing system, “Tracs,” following widespread public and political backlash.
Public Outcry Over Penalties
The system, launched just weeks ago, triggered controversy after traffic police issued an estimated 30,000 challans, leading critics to label the heavy penalties as excessive and aimed at “money-minting.” Officials are now considering rationalizing the fine structure to address public anger while maintaining that the automated system itself will remain operational.
System’s Purpose and Future
Sindh IGP Ghulam Nabi Memon defended the system’s purpose as promoting “deterrence and road safety” but acknowledged that its success relies on better coordination with local infrastructure agencies. The government is expected to announce the reduction in fines by the end of the month, though the e-ticketing initiative will not be rolled back. The police also noted that they are addressing complaints, particularly for individuals receiving tickets for vehicles they no longer own.
