Since last year, the Pakistani car market has welcomed a number of new entrants. Proton, MG, Hyundai, DFSK Prince, United Motors, KIA, and some others. All have come to the local market to earn a place in the hearts of Pakistani car buyers and take down the monopoly of Big 3 automakers in Pakistan, Suzuki, Toyota, and Honda. A few new entrants have gotten more popular than the others, and their popularity is only growing with time. But the truth of the matter is that it’s good for a start, but the journey of taking the place of Big 3 is far from over

As per the car sales report by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), all car companies had a happening sales year. Still, Suzuki and Toyota are the reigning champions. Here are all the cars of the PAMA report ranked from highest to lowest in terms of their sales for the fiscal year 2020-2021.

Suzuki Alto1. Suzuki Alto

With the highest sales for the most months, looks like the Suzuki Alto has officially won the place of Mehran. Thousands of Pakistanis buy this small hatchback for their families every month. Suzuki has sold 37,720 units in FY20-21. 22% more sales compared to 30,916 units sold a year earlier.

Toyota Yaris

2. Toyota Yaris

Launched just a year ago, Toyota Yaris has become the #1 sedan in Pakistan. Sales of Yaris started to take a toll on Corolla, Civic, and City from June 2020. The numbers only went up from there, winning the position of the second-highest selling car with 28,295 units under its belt.

Toyota Corolla Altis Grande

3. Toyota Corolla

Although Yaris has outperformed its older sibling, the Toyota Corolla, for months, the premium sedan is still one of the top-selling cars in Pakistan. Total FY20-21 sales of Corolla stood at 18,355, which is down 20% from 22,140 units sold a year earlier.

Suzuki Cultus

4. Suzuki Cultus

After Alto, there is another hot seller Suzuki hatchback, the Suzuki Cultus. During FY20-21, this practical family car won 17,510 sales, 42% more than 2,307 units sold in FY19-20.

Suzuki Wagon R

5. Suzuki Wagon R

Another Suzuki passenger car has made it to the top 5 best selling cars of FY20-21. Suzuki Wagon R has made a comeback with 12,659 sales. The car had a rough year before that, with only 6,984 units sold in FY19-20.

Honda Civic

6. Honda Civic/City

PAMA report records a joint sales number of Honda’s two popular sedans, Honda Civic and Honda City, which is 25,276 for the fiscal year 2020-21. We cannot really say if this number should rank the Honda cars as number 6 on of best-selling cars in March. But if we evenly divide the total number between the two cars, their individual sales stand somewhere around 12,500. Hence, the sixth place!

Please note that cars from new entrants like KIA, Proton, Changan, United, and many others are not a part of this list because their parent companies are not affiliated with PAMA. Even if we had the sales numbers of these cars, pretty sure they all would have been below the top 5 contenders on this list.

I agree author, products from new entrants have still to pass durability test to be truly able to bring effects of competition in the market. For most Pakistani car buyers car’s maintenance cost is important over long-term period and since none of the new entrants have yet passed over seven year period, people do not have figures required to maintain new cars.

Some models are found missing in the list which should have been discussed otherwise. MG, Sportage, Elantra, Alsvin, Glory, Picanto, Carnival, Ioniq ? and some other new entrants eg Haval, Proton. In my personal opinion, cross overs’ bubble is going to explode soon. Sportage has met with fire ? problem whereas Hyundai is unable to meet demands of Tucson deliveries. Thus Japan vehicles are expected to rule again.
