Overview:

Under the PakWheels budget series, today we are reviewing the Suzuki Margalla car for you. Suzuki introduced this design from 1992 to 1998. From 1990-1992, the company launched its imported variant called Swift in Pakistan. The vehicle was very similar to Margalla in shape and exterior, with the engine power of 1000cc. However, Swift  failed locally mainly due to its low power engine, and secondly, its Japanese spare parts were rather costly for the local consumers.

There were a few reasons behind the success of Margalla in Pakistan when Suzuki released it in 1992. Firstly, it was a local car and its parts were readily available in the domestic market; secondly, it was 1300cc as compared to Swift’s 1000cc in the same shape, and lastly, customers found this vehicle more reliable. The car has a carburetor engine, which was famous at the time of its launch.

Before the release of this car, Suzuki was famous as a hatchback car maker in Pakistan. The company had launched only small cars like FX and Mehran in 800cc category, and Swift, and Khyber in 1000cc range. This was Suzuki’s first car with 1300cc engine power and got immense popularity in the local consumer market. From 1992 to 1998, the vehicle recorded a good sales figure in Pakistan. After the release of Baleno in 1998, Suzuki discontinued this car in the country. You can see this car on Pakistani roads even today, especially in small cities where people look for value-to-money cars. We think this car is the strongest contestant in our Budget series.

Suzuki launched two variants of Margalla in Pakistan. One was Margalla Plus and the other was Margalla Basic. The Plus model had power windows and power steering with selective colors i.e., White Ash and Black. Meanwhile, the basic model was launched in white, green, grey, and maroon colors without power windows and steering.

Exterior:

The exterior of Margalla was a little different from Swift i.e.; its front grill was different from its predecessor. Its whole outlook is somewhat similar to Suzuki’s another car, Cultus which was later launched in Pakistan. Side look of this car will take you back in 90s when this type of exterior was in style. Although you will not find anything extraordinary in its design today, but it was a very modern vehicle in its time. The car was very also famous in India, where it was launched under the name of Maruti, and you can see it in several Bollywood movies of the 90s.

The car has 13 inch wheels with no alloy rims. Furthermore, the company kept on changing the thickness of its side black strip with new models. The rear end of the car is 100 percent similar to 1000cc swift. The only difference was that Margalla has a black garnish of plastic, while Swift had brake lights covering its back. The size of the car is quite similar to Cultus, excluding trunk. Margalla’s trunk is very decent in size, which is a plus point for you if you want to travel with your family.

Interior:

The interior of this car is also quite similar to old imported Swift. The cushioning of seats is very good and gives a simple look. The vehicle is spacious; you can drive it very easily due to the space provided in front seats. The backseat also has perfect leg space as four people can travel in this vehicle quite easily for a long commute. For intra-city travel, four adults and a child can comfortably sit in the car.

Suspension/Road Clearance:

The suspension of Margalla is perfect for Pakistani roads and has no road-clearance issue i.e., it can easily cross over the speed breakers of our streets.

Negative Aspects:

The performance of its AC is not at-par with modern 1300cc vehicles, but its performance was excellent when it was launched. However, its cooling is still better than other Suzuki cars like Mehran and Khyber. Another issue this car is facing is the placement of its fuel pump, which is inside its fuel tank. The vehicle mainly faces the problem of fuel pump due to the poor quality of petrol. Thirdly, modern mechanics and workshops do not understand much about the carburetor engines, hence, you have to find specific mechanics for the car.

Positive Aspects:

The car is very economical as you can easily find all of its parts in the local market. You can also order its body and engine parts from the PakWheels website quite conveniently. Its oil service will cost you only Rs2,200-2,500 as standard Mobil oil is used for its engine. The intra-city average of this car is around 11 kilometers per one liter, while long-journey mileage is about 13-14 kilometers.

Price:

You can buy its imported variant of the 1990 in Rs200,000-250,000, and local models are available in a range of Rs300,000 to Rs450,000, depending on its condition and engine performance. Margalla is an excellent choice in a budget of under Rs500,000 for both family and individual use.

Final Verdict:

This car is one of the best choices you can make for a value-to-money vehicle. It is economical; its spare parts are readily available in the local market and have a decent mileage average for a 1300cc car. If you want to buy a vehicle under the budged of Rs500,000, this is maybe your best choice.
