Standard, but Cheaper: Tesla’s New Models to Revive Sales in Europe

204

Tesla has launched new “Standard” versions of the Model 3 and Model Y in Europe to counter declining sales. Data shows Tesla’s sales in the region dropped 12.3% year over year, with a more significant 36% decline excluding Norway. The introduction of these models aims to address the need for more competitive entry-level options.

The Model 3 Standard is priced at €36,990 in Germany, France, and Italy, falling just below the €37,000 mark, making it more competitive with mainstream petrol cars and undercutting rivals in the electric vehicle market. The Model Y Standard is priced at €39,990 in major European markets.

How Tesla is Cutting Costs?

To achieve these lower prices, Tesla has removed several premium features. Both models lose the rear passenger touchscreen, premium materials, heated rear seats, advanced audio systems, and some driver-assist features. The wheels and glass elements have been simplified, creating a more basic cabin feel.

The Model Y Standard is more “de-contented” than the Model 3, lacking the visible glass roof, which the Model 3 retains.

Missing Features:

  • Partially textile seats
  • No 8-inch rear touchscreen
  • No heated rear seats
  • Simpler wheels
  • Basic audio system (no subwoofer or amplifiers)
  • Panoramic roof and light bars removed

Despite these cutbacks, both models retain Tesla’s core strengths: strong range, fast charging, and access to the Supercharger network.

What It Means for Pakistan

The global EV market is getting more competitive, with BYD providing tough competition to Tesla. Known for its value-for-money offerings, BYD is gaining popularity in developing countries like Pakistan. This highlights the need for Tesla to adjust its strategy. The future availability of its new Tesla Standard variants in Pakistan will depend largely on private importers and market conditions.
