Toyota Launches Smaller Land Cruiser FJ in Japan

Toyota has officially launched the all-new Land Cruiser FJ in Japan, adding a smaller and more manageable model to the Land Cruiser family.

Sales began in Japan on May 14, 2026, according to Toyota’s global newsroom. The new FJ joins the Land Cruiser 300, 70, and 250 series, giving Toyota a compact off-road SUV for buyers who want Land Cruiser toughness without the size of a full-size model.

The main point is simple: Toyota has made the Land Cruiser formula smaller, but it has not turned it into a soft crossover.

A Smaller Land Cruiser, Not a Soft SUV

The Land Cruiser FJ has been developed around Toyota’s “Freedom and Joy” idea. But unlike many compact SUVs that only borrow rugged styling cues, the FJ retains proper off-road hardware.

Toyota says the SUV uses a ladder-frame structure, with a platform refined from its IMV series, known for durability in rough conditions. That places the FJ closer to Toyota’s working off-road DNA than a regular urban crossover.

Its smaller dimensions also matter. The FJ is 350 mm shorter and 125 mm narrower than the Land Cruiser 250. That should make it easier to drive in tight streets, narrow trails, and crowded areas.

The 5.5-metre turning radius also helps its case as a more manageable off-roader.

Engine, 4WD and Features

The Japanese-market Land Cruiser FJ is powered by a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 163 PS and 246 Nm.

It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive system.

Standard equipment includes:

  • Toyota Safety Sense
  • Panoramic View Monitor
  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • 12.3-inch display audio system
  • Five-seat cabin
  • VX grade specification

The 2.7L petrol engine is simple and familiar by Toyota standards, but it is not a fuel-saving setup. Toyota’s quoted 8.7 km/L WLTC figure shows that this is still an off-road SUV first, not an economy-focused family crossover.

Accessories and Customization

Toyota is also offering outdoor-focused accessories for the Land Cruiser FJ.

Reported accessories from Toyota, ARB and Modellista include:

  • Roof racks
  • Side steps
  • Body kits
  • Different wheels
  • Storage solutions
  • Outdoor-use accessories

This reinforces the FJ’s positioning as a lifestyle and off-road vehicle rather than just a compact SUV with a famous badge.

Market Plans Outside Japan

The Land Cruiser FJ has already appeared in Thailand, where it is produced. Reports suggest Toyota may offer it in markets such as South Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Latin America and India.

However, Europe and North America are reportedly not part of the plan for now due to emissions and import-related hurdles.

Toyota has not announced a launch in Pakistan.

What It Means for Pakistan

For Pakistan, the Land Cruiser FJ is a watchlist model, not a confirmed launch story.

The appeal is clear: Land Cruiser hardware in a smaller body. A ladder-frame chassis, part-time 4WD, compact dimensions, and Toyota’s off-road reputation would make it appealing to buyers seeking something smaller than the LC300 or Prado.

But there is a major caution.

Smaller and more accessible in Japan does not mean affordable in Pakistan. If the FJ arrives via CBU or private import channels, taxes, duties, exchange rates, and registration costs could drive the price very high.

Pakistani Buyer Type Takeaway
LC300 buyer FJ is not a luxury replacement
Prado/Fortuner watcher Could be interesting if priced sensibly
Off-road buyer Ladder-frame and part-time 4WD are the real appeal
City SUV buyer 2.7L petrol fuel economy may be a concern
Import watcher Wait for source-market and pricing clarity

Bottom Line

The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ brings the Land Cruiser name into a smaller and more usable package while keeping proper 4×4 hardware.

It is compact compared with the larger Land Cruiser models, but it still uses a ladder-frame structure, part-time 4WD and a rugged Toyota platform.

For Pakistan, it could become an interesting import-watch model. But until Toyota announces official plans, buyers should treat it as a global launch story, not a local arrival.
