Should you opt for Unidirectional Tyres?

A tyre that is manufactured and designed to rotate in one direction is known simply as  “Directional tyre or Unidirectional tyre”. Unidirectional tyres are simple tyres and you can easily locate them between other tyres since they have a particular distinct tread pattern. The tread pattern of the unidirectional tyres appears to be like an arrow pointing in one direction. On the sidewall/ side of the tyre, the arrow is present which indicates the direction of rotation of the tyre. Hence, it can also tell whether the tyre on the vehicle should be mounted on the right side or left the side. By, this you can easily guess the direction of rotation of the tyre but you all might have also observed a riced up Civic or the badly bruised Corolla that has been driven on some rural areas, having inversely mounted directional/unidirectional tyres from a local body kit. Apart from this particular tread pattern, unidirectional tyres have a thick rib/band at the center of the tyre. When you are driving, this thick rib at the center provides continuous contact with the surface of the road. Thus, the purpose of this rib is not only to provide a good contact of the tyre with the road/surface you are driving on but it helps in improving the ride by providing better and improved handling and braking in both dry and wet conditions. When you steer and change the direction, this one thick band of rubber in the center thus provide improved steering response. Even during driving; in response to the minor steering corrections, this band improves the steering response.

These Tyre are not as good as full wet tyres but still, they provide better water dispersion than the regular Tyre. When the Tyre will rotate, it will evacuate the water from the back. Some people believe that the grooves on the directional tyre also help in the evacuation of water from underneath. Grooves undoubtedly are designed to help tyres regarding water evacuation. But still, whether it’s unidirectional tyres or any type of tyres, water is evacuated circumferential i.e., through the rear of the tyre.
