5 Reasons To Buy A Station Wagon Instead Of A Sedan In Pakistan

19 501

Personally, I am a huge fan of station wagons. Call me crazy but I find them a bit more pleasing to the eyes as compared to an average sedan. So the other day I came across an ad of an immaculate looking fully-loaded Toyota Corolla Fielder, and I showed it to a friend of mine. He glanced at the photo for a second and said: “yeh to daba hai”(Its just a box). It was not the first time someone had said something like this, as I was kind of used to hearing such comments about station wagons. But this time around, I decided to put a deep thought and tried to come up with a genuine reason to why people hate station wagons. But everything is there for a reason, and I ended up finding more good than bad.

Here are 5 reasons why I think station wagons are a better investment than a sedan.

Practicality

Now naturally station wagons are bigger as compared to their regular siblings. They offer more and better boot space. Particularly useful for those who have a big family or often find themselves going on a long journey. Even small station wagons have enough room to accommodate big and cumbersome luggage.

Versatility

Station wagons are quite versatile as they have large tailgates which make loading and unloading luggage a breeze. You have less to worry about the bumper being scratched or placing luggage in awkward positions to adjust, unlike in sedans.

Low-Center of Gravity

So they might look like SUV’s, but they aren’t that high from the ground. It is a big plus as this factor matters a lot in handling. People conscious about the driving dynamics of their car won’t be feeling much of a difference compared to a sedan.

Fuel-Economy

When it comes to fuel economy, this can be a make or break deal for many, especially in a country like Pakistan. So as compared to crossovers, station wagons don’t consume that much of fuel. Their aerodynamic shape gives them an edge over crossovers and SUVs for better fuel economy.

Uniqueness

Okay so many of you might disagree with me on this one, and comment like crazy on how ugly and hideous the station wagons generally look. But if you consider the purpose of a station wagon then there is no denying that these are the kind of cars which actually fulfill the needs of many rather than spending so much on a crossover! These cars are not only unique but, in my humble opinion, are also attractive. Besides, beauty is always subjective.

You are very right about the practical aspect of station wagons and yes I am also really fond of them as we owned a Toyota corolla KE30 station wagon in white color, bought brand new by my Abbu jee and we kept it for 30 years!

I personally like station-wagons. But, since in Pakistan; it’s almost 9-months when you need to turn-on your AC … bigger cab of station wagon reduces the AC efficiency by 33% – at-least. and if you’re thinking of inter-city travel for let’s say 10-days a year …; its not worth to destroy leisure of remaining 355 days. let me know your opinion about it.

They suck, look ugly and are for soccer moms. Period.
And all the mini vans u can buy in pak are used and with no warranty whatsoever.
Civic is better than all the minivans u can buy in pak.

  4. Awais Yousaf says

Haha! I knew someone will definetly write such comment

  5. Awais Yousaf says

Yeah definetly AC efficency is reduced but that doesnt make much of a difference as modern day station wagons have good AC’s! But definetly it would take more time to cool down the cabin! But still it will ne faster than any domestic car.

  6. Abdullah says

And bro station wagons are dead, they are called minivans now.

Somebody (obviously a guy who owns a showroom) told me that he recieved a price list for honda civic 2016 and its gonna cost 34 lakhs o.O
    Can u confirm this?!?

  8. Awais Yousaf says

Bro! i have been in contact with a few people who told me that if the turbo version gets introduced it will be around 30 lacks due the fact that it is the costlier option (touring model) which costs a minimum of 26,000USD in US. Other models will be cheaper from 21-26 lacks! (You can expect some fluctuations)

  9. Awais Yousaf says

Btw there is a difference in station Wagon and a minivan! In simple words the station wagon is a hatchback version of an already existing sedan/saloon. Whereas a minivan is a standalone with a different body platform usually bigger than a station wagon!

A very good and debate-worthy topic. Good step by the writer to initiate the discussion.

    1. Station Wagons such as E100 Corolla G-Touring and L-Touring have been and are still very popular in northern mountainous areas of Pakistan. They used to come with leaf sprung rear suspension. Recently G-Touring and L-Touring have been discontinued therefore Corolla Fielder, Succeed, Probox have started to appear.

    2. In many countries of South America, station wagons are more popular compared to the sedan variants of the same cars.

    3. Another name for station wagon is estate car.

    4. Writer has discussed ease of loading/unloading into station wagon. However, modern sedans’ (last 20 years) boot lid is made in a manner that the opening of the boot is flush with the bumper. And the opening is quite big, the lid opens completely 90-degree. You can compare it to 1974 Corolla and other cars of its era where the boot lid was small, the lock was far above the bumper so you’d have to lift any luggage very high and then drop it into trunk, and the lid only opened 50-degrees or so.

    5. Station wagon has one disadvantage compared to sedan. In sedan if you put something valuable such laptop bag etc. in the trunk, it is well hidden from the sight of robbers. However, some station wagons do not have the rear quarter glass which is usually targeted by thieves to gain access to the cabin, therefore sedan and wagon can be considered comparable. Each has its own disadvantage.

    6. It is as easy to reverse a station wagon as a hatchback because the car ends where the window is.

    7. The loading capacity of a sedan and its equivalent wagon is the same, unless the wagon model uses a different suspension setup, an example is the point 1, where Corolla sedan had a coil sprung rear suspension whereas the wagon G-Touring and L-touring had leaf sprung rear suspension.

    8. People’s habits depend upon availability. Toyota decided to market the sedan variants of their cars, hence the consumer’s mindsets are made. Had Toyota decided to produce the wagon variants only, people would be more ready to accept the wagon body.

    9. Technically the drag on the sedan should be less than a wagon because the tail end of wagon is more abrupt. So compared to CUVs and SUVs, wagons may consume less fuel but they may consume more fuel than their own sedan counterparts.

    10. Before the SUV craze, there had been a van craze and a wagon craze as well. Brands famous for selling popular wagons were Buick, Volvo, Mitsubishi and Nissan. In Pakistan also some famous Nissan Cedrics ended up and lived long loved lives. Mitsubishi made their mark with Space Wagon. Buick had numerous models and Volvo also had a few, very strong, never-dying models the kids of today can never imagine. Mercedes also introduced some shooting brake models. Shooting brake is technically a wagon but only 2-door.

    11. Other wagons available in pakistan are Nissan AdVan (a basic version of Wingroad), Toyota Succeed (a higher version of Probox). A few rare very old 1987 model Mitsubishi Lancers also exist in the mix somewhere.

    12. Due to its shape, a wagon almost always appears longer than its sedan counterpart. And you know, length = luxury.

    13. Cars such as Civic and Corolla have been available in hatch, sedan and wagon bodies for the same chassis. In these cases, the wagon body is the heaviest and thus the driving dynamics of hatch, sedan and wagon, all 3 a re totally different despite being mechanically the same.

    14. Wagon body is considered to be workhorse, while the same car would have 4-wheel disc brake in sedan form, the wagon body would come without the goodies such as it would have rear wheel drums. Just sayin’.

Are you sure about the price list? I was expecting the highest trim level to be around 28.5 or max 30. 34 is way off.
