Watch Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 EV’s Tyres Turn 90 Degrees
Hyundai has been working on its e-Corner technology for the past five years. Previously, it had showcased the technology in purpose-built vehicles which are not on the market. But, last week at CES, the company showed off all the new technological features in their Ioniq 5 EV.
The e-Corner technology includes tyres that can turn a little above 90 degrees and a 90-degree four wheel steering. With the help of this technology, the car can do a crab walk – move exactly towards its side without turning – as well as zero turns, pivot turns, and diagonal driving.
All of these cool features can be seen in this video which will surely make your jaw drop!
The most impressive of these maneuvers is the crab driving. It allows the driver to turn all wheels at an angle of 90 degrees and get their car easily in and out of a parallel parking space. A zero turn allows the driver to turn the vehicle in a zero-turning-radius rotation. While a tight pivot turn is also possible by only moving the rear wheels of the car. One more driving feature is that of diagonal driving.
E-Corner Technology
The e-Corner technology is a combination of brake-by-wire, steer-by-wire, an electric motor, and an electric damper in all four wheel assemblies. This smart technology is very space-efficient and can be installed in all small and big cars without compromising space. This allows Hyundai to use it in everything from small electric sedans to flagship electric SUVs.
Hyundai Mobis is aiming to mass-produce this feature in all kinds of vehicles, which means it will not be exclusive to Hyundai cars only. The feature might be available in other vehicles as well, and it may be as soon as 2025. Although Hyundai Mobis has not yet announced any specific time for rolling it out officially!
