Ford Teams Up with Renault to Counter Rising EV Competition

147

Western carmakers are facing tough competition from Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, according to Ford CEO Jim Farley, who said they are “fighting for their lives.”

Chinese brands like BYD and Chery are producing high-quality EVs at much lower prices, pushing Western companies to rethink their strategies.

However, this pivot is proving difficult; Western automakers have historically prioritized larger vehicles designed to accommodate massive batteries, leaving them struggling to master the engineering required for smaller, electric cars.

Now, to counter this, according to The Guardian, Ford has partnered with Renault to develop two affordable, small electric cars, set to launch by 2028. There is also a potential expansion of this collaboration into the creation of commercial vans as well.

These vehicles will use Renault’s Ampere EV platform but carry Ford’s brand and will be built at Renault’s Douai plant in northern France. This is the same plant that makes the Renault 5, an electric car praised for its fantastic design at a low cost.

The move reflects a wider shift in the industry, as Western automakers struggle with high production costs, slow EV sales, and strict environmental regulations.

Many of these companies, including Ford, have already had to cut jobs and reduce their electric vehicle plans. Renault, on the other hand, believes this partnership will help them stay competitive in the changing market.

Impact on Pakistan

Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) are already making a strong impact in Pakistan, with great sales and positive reviews. Ford, however, is focusing on Europe, where the rise of Chinese EVs is causing declining sales and public interest. Ford’s new strategy with Renault to develop small EVs by 2028 could help them regain ground in Europe. If successful, this might lead to Ford entering markets like Pakistan, but time will tell as they focus on Europe first.
