We’re back with a first-look review of the all-new GR sports variants of the Toyota Fortuner and the Hilux Revo. Toyota Gazoo Racing is a Motorsport division of Toyota that develops standard Toyotas into “even better” cars, and Toyota IMC has finally introduced its GR variants here in Pakistan. In this review, we will review the newly added features in these GR-S variants and test their drive.

History

This generation of Toyota Hilux Revo and the Fortuner has been a big success in Pakistan, and during its production period, Toyota has consistently brought improvements to these cars. After their debut in 2016, a 2.8 1GD engine was introduced in 2018 in Revo and Fortuner. Then they got a facelift in 2021, where they received several changes, and then in 2022, top-of-the-line variants were added to both the cars’ lineup, namely the Fortuner Legender and the Revo Rocco. Now, in 2023, Toyota has offered the GR sports, which form the top-spec variants of these cars yet again.

Fortuner GR-S Exterior Changes

The front profile of the Fortuner GR-S is refreshed with a redesigned bumper. The radiator grill’s shape is now different, with more aggressive edges. The fog light housing and a blacked-out skid plate are also changed. The headlamps are split-style LEDs which are the same as in the Legender. The sides are now blacked out, with all the chrome trims now being body-color and gloss black. However, the main highlight is the dark grey 18-inch alloys and red GR brake calipers, adding a pinch of sportiness. The rear is not changed much except for the body colour trim, Fortuner spelled on it, and a gloss black rear diffuser. GR badges are now added at the front and rear profiles of the car as well.

Fortuner GR-S Interior Changes

Sitting in the Fortuner GR-S, the first change you feel is the suede and leather GR seats which are now very well-padded. The interior is completely blacked out, including the seats, with red stitching all around. GR badges are everywhere, reminding you that it is no ordinary Fortuner. Smoked chrome trims are now added, which add a very premium touch. The steering wheel is also stitched in red with a prominent GR badge. Moreover, the instrument cluster has also changed with red dials and a GR animation. The center panel, previously a wooden trim, is now carbon fiber, and the pedals are finished in metal.

Revo GR-S Exterior Changes

The front profile of the Revo GR-S now looks very distinctive, mainly due to the huge blacked-out grille with Toyota now spelled out. The matte black trims in the Rocco are now replaced with gloss black trims in the GR-S. On the sides, you see the same alloys as in the Fortuner GR-S; dark grey 18-inch rims with red GR brake calipers. The over-fenders are now in gloss black, yet chrome has been deleted from the sides. The deck bar is also glossed black, now with lights, you can turn on and off from the inside. The rear features a gloss black bumper with GR badges spread throughout the car’s exterior.

Revo GR-S Interior Changes

As with the Fortuner, Revo GR-S’s interior also features new GR seats with a contrast of suede and leather. The interior is fully black with red stitching denoting GR. The steering wheel is stitched in red, and the instrument cluster also features red dials. A major change is that the Revo GR-S has paddle shifters which will enhance driving pleasure for many drivers. Additionally, the infotainment screen is now upgraded with a new red and black interface which now features Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Other than that, the basic features are identical to the standard Revo.

Drive

Now behind the wheels of both of these cars, the drive in terms of power has not changed as no engine upgrades have been done to the GR-S variants. Although, one mechanical change has been made to both cars, and that is the addition of monotube shock absorbers. These absorbers are often used in racing and performance-centric cars, and they use gas pressure to absorb shocks. With this addition, these GR-S variants’ stability feels much more improved, and suspension response over potholes and uneven roads is better. These shock absorbers will also help in high-speed stability, providing rigidity.

Price

As of now, the Fortuner GR-S is priced at PKR 21,089,000, while the Revo GR-S is priced at PKR 16,149,000.
