There is no problem with these engines if maintained properly...
The problem of backfiring is due to coil's poor designing. Bottom connector of these coils develop cracks over time due to continuous heating and cooling and then starts leaking current causing unneccessary sparks which causes backfires from cylinders in suction stroke. These cracks if properly identified could be repaired easily with epoxy. I have myself done it and since then there is no problem...
Side coils are more successful as their connectors are comparatively further from engines so they are not that sensitive to damages....

Infact distributors are much less efficient in providing good sparks at high rpms that is why waste spark systems and Coil on Plug systems were developed...
In latter two sysems, coils get more time to charge thus provide much efficient spark at higher rpms...Plus distributor's mechanical contacts wear with time further reducing efficiency...

Which model alto do you have?
You can get normal Baleno 05 from 600-650k....
Good ones are very hard to find and wont cost you less than 700k in Lahore.
I get 11-12km/l local with ac and around 15 on highway with ac but mine is exceptionally well maintained.
I recommend you stay with your car if it is not giving you any major problem...
