Unhappy Belta sputters on cold startup!!! Any suggestions??

    Hi guys,

This thing has been bothering me for the last several weeks now. Can't figure out what to do?

When I start the car in the mornings or late evenings after work, it hesitates/sputters for several seconds and then it idles normally and runs perfectly fine. Then if I again stop and start the car, it starts fine without sputtering after startup. Only happens after the car is standing for a long period overnight or say 6-7 hours on a cold startup.

I put in another spare used good battery to see if my battery was the problem, but the same issue was there. Also replaced the spark plugs with new Denso Iridium ones, but again the same sputtering problem persists for a few secs after starting. Other work I have done is had the car scanned and cleaned the throttle body & MAF sensor earlier last month. There was just one error code P1605 - Rough idling. Any suggestions what else I should do???????

    Thanks

Sir i think there is a problem with fuel pressure. Test the fuel pressure if the pressure gauges are available. Otherwise open the fuel return line with ignition on and without starting the car fuel must be coming back and be careful with to put the line in container so the fuel is not spilled.

    Hope this helps.

You'd be better off asking Belta Master Murtaza_Murti at the Toyota Belta Owners' & Fans' Club!

@Vajih...I did...and he even came and started the one evening at my office and at first thought it was the battery but my battery is perfect at 14 volts. I spoke to him several times but I guess he is also busy. So he is aware about it.

Strange!!! This morning I started the car and it started fine. I did not wait 20 secs or pump the gas pedal. Although I switched it to ACC and waited a few secs till the fuel pump started up. Will check again this evening after work when the car will have been parked for about 8 hours and see.

I wonder if the gas pedal push and wait the last 2 days cleared off something????? Or was there something choking the fuel filter that passed through ?????

    Default Update!!!!!

Just wanted to update for the benefit of those who contributed and others who may read my post.

The other day while talking to my car electrician he told me that he was 99% sure, in his experience that its the starter motor that probably has to be serviced/repaired. So he told me to lets give it a try before going for the expensive fuel filter replacement.

When he removed that starter (which was a pain) as its right under the airfilter box, infact at the bottom. Not much space. The bushes were cut and had to be repaired and also the inner spindle was loose. (Forgive me but I'm not familiar with the technicalities :-p) :iono: Anyways, he cleaned up the whole thing and after getting the bushes repaired, he fixed it back and now that sputtering problem at startup seems to have vanished so far, 3 days down the line since he did it.

I remember on my 1st Gen vitz too he solved a similar problem regarding startup where he diagnosed the armiture was damaged and needed replacement including the bushes in the starter.... which resolved that problem too.:iono:

Sometimes it does sputter but not as bad as before though. In fact now I switch the ignition to ACC (not start) leave for about 15-20 secs and then start. This morning also started fine.

so then changing the starter motor seems a more reliable solution.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes that's the most viable option. You have nothing to lose.

that 15-20 seconds wait actually nrmalize the fuel pressure. experts cn correct me if i am wrong. Youc an hear fuel pump throwing fuel for few seconds on every startup. if fuel delivery is slow for any reason, letting it throw fuel in the beggining might help with startup fuel requirements, otherwise fuel starvationc auses sputtering and rough idling. I am unable to relate this problem to starter motor. Once car is start, starter motor job is done, and sputtering happens after that, right?

Sure no problem. Always ready to help if it helped me out. Although I mentioned it does sputter sometimes a little but not as bad as before but that could be the fuel filter which im delaying to replace:-p due to lack of funds at the moment.

Yes it happens after immediately after startup for a few secs. Strangely though, it was quite noticeable in the beginning but after the starter service/repair its much less but still there. Also does pumping the gas pedal help?

Most obvious I can think of now is the fuel filter.

Your problem is fuel related IMO. can be filter or fuel pump.

Yes that's what I'm thinking but its not affecting in any way as the car drives normally with good pick just the initial sputtering when startup issue which is now much better than before.

So will wait and see ...........
