UPDATE: to complete this SQ setup, i also purchased the following:
-Pioneer PRS-D1100M reference series mono amp
600rms (@2ohms and 1ohms)
-Pioneer w12PRS reference series subwoofer
pure high SQ sub...used in SQ competitions
18mm xmax

So guys, i am sure most of you know that I have been collecting various things for my Corolla SQ setup. Well I present to you my latest purchase....not one, not two but 3 things
I believe everything in an SQ setup is critical...from the wires, damping, tuners, crossovers, digital to analog converters, DSP processors, noise filters, staging etc etc...
so I have tried to cover some of these areas with the following:
Pioneer DEX-P90rs Headunit:
This headunit is part of the competition grade component system developed by pioneer, and is among the high end reference series of products by pioneer. it is regarded as one of the best headunits ever made by pioneer and has been used in SQ competitions in the last 4 years
Some of the details of this are:
-Multi 24-Bit Digital-to-Analogue Converter
-3 pairs of gold-plated 4 Volt RCA preouts for system building.
-Optical output to matching DEQ-P90 Processor for increased audio control.
-Component operation only - no inbuilt amplification.
Pioneer DEQ-P90 Component Digital Signal Processor (DSP):
Made exclusively for use with the P90rs. Some of the features of this are:
Built-in DSP
Multi 24-bit Burr Brown D/A Converters
5-mode preset equalizer
Digital listening position selector
Time Alignment
Parametric bass/treble controls
31-band L/R independent equalizer (±12dB/0.5dB steps)
Built-in crossover network (independent for both Left/Right channels)
Crossover frequency: 20Hz - 20,000Hz (variable)
Crossover slope: 0dB to 6dB
Crossover presets: 5
4-way independent Left/Right crossover network (high/mid/low/subwoofer)
High-voltage preout (4V)
Optical input (with DEX-P90RS)
Gold-plated 8-channel RCA output (high/mid/low/subwoofer)
this setup when used in combination gives pure competition standard Sound Quality...ofcourse only when setup properly
the cool thing is that there are external noise filters provided for every single wire with the headunit and processor to keep noise levels to a minimum. this really impressed me the most. and the coolest thing is that both things are made in Japan!!
anyway, the reason i got the above combo is because I wanted a great sounding frontstage in my car. earlier I was going for type X components, but after suggestions from Nauman bhai (STJ-174), I went for the focals...which is among the best component producers in the world.
Focal Kr2 Components:
I got the Focal Kr2 components. The build quality is out of this world, just as I had expected after seeing the pics of STJ's focals
this is an 80rms, 2 ohms component set (my pioneer PRS-d4100f amp gives 150rms @ 2ohms, so more than enough for this speaker)
the crossover has 3 settings for the tweeter and also for the midrange. there is so much that you can do with this crossover. havent seen anything like this, or with such amazing built quality. i am sure they sound great too
so guys, with the pioneer headunit+DSP, I can easily go fully active for the frontstage. i dont even have to use the passive crossovers of the focals, and can use the digital crossover network of the pioneer headunit. i can even add a midrange speaker to the front stage for a 3-way system in the front - which i wont though. atleast not presently.
the pioneer can easily make a setup of any configuration. 2-way, 3-way, 4-way etc....independent crossovers and 31-band equalizer for both left and right channel, which can be used both independently or in combination for either speaker in the car. front, rear, woofer etc can
all be controlled independently. each can be assigned different bass/trebel settings or crossovers and filter settings. This is truly audiophile heaven...
and the best part is that the P90rs has an optical digital input, so i can attach any audio/video source (such as a pioneer DVD player) that can be controlled by the p90rs. its similar to a high-end home theatre component system
In the end, i would like to thank 959, Maggi and Smartboy for encouraging me to go for this headunit and DSP processor combo..
and special thanks to the one and only, Mr.STJ. Sir my apologies for pestering you so much for advice and suggestions. Thanks for putting up with me :P
PS: This system will be up in running in a few weeks. Still have to purchase an SQ mono amp and woofer. Pics coming up shortly
