    Default Charade Engine Swap

    Hi All

I recently bought a 1986 Charade Turbo Diesel, 2 Door Version. I want to have its engine replaced as the Diesel engine doesn't perform well and its maintenance is a pain.

Now my mechanic is suggesting that Charade 1.0 L petrol engine be used. I however, want to go for a better engine.

This car has a smaller engine bay than the G100 version and cannot accommodate bigger engines easily.

Please suggest me which engine I should get. I don't need exceptional performance. My preference is a pocket-friendly swap with a reliable performance. I just want to avoid recurring visits to the workshop.

Waiting for comments by auto experts here.

for this go for an original daihatsu engine that fits neatly - if you wish you can shoehorn anything in there but it wont be reliable enough unless you are good with mechanical work yourself

    AZICOLL, hash4u, last_look, aquarianstar25:

Thank you for your advice. I am pretty sure that a lot of modification will be required in the engine bay for fitting in Toyota engines. I am more inclined towards Cultus/Baleno. I am in Lahore, and will be checking out Bilal Ganj. Any idea about a fair price for these engines?

    Xulfiqar:

I am willing to spend time and money at the time of swap. By reliability, I mean that once swap job is complete, it should not continue posing problems.

I have no problem with having the engine bay modified, but I am afraid that it will require continuous adjustments and visits to workshops. I will appreciate your further advice in this.

Taking on an outer family swap would not be your cup of tea then, when a manufacturer designs a car they use far more advanced tools than welding torches and inchtape.. i hope you get the idea,, remain within the family and you will be ok, but unless you are easy with working on your car in every aspect, go for it.

Ive replied on many swap posts - you'll get the idea

    Xulfiqar:

Thanks. I understand what you are saying. I would get the modifications if I had much time on hand. Unfortunately I frequently go out of town, and wont have much time.

Is there a specific Daihatsu engine you would suggest? Please give an idea about a fair price as well.

    Thanks for your advice.

Go for original CB100 engine, its the best option, forget about cultus engine as it will cost you around 40k for non efi and will require changes in mounts, while the original petrol engine will fit like a charm, plus you wont need gear box.

You can sell ur current engine at about 8-10 K and you can get very neat engine at max 25k (with gear) and without gear it will cost you around 20k .... you can get petrol engines from 15k to 25k, but 15k engines are Singapori engines, go for japanese as its better option.

So your overall cost for swap will be around 15K ...
if you go for cultus engine, you have to buy full engine (with gear box) and with would cost you over 40K (all setup even after selling ur current engine at 10K)
If you wants a 1.3 engine, then 4EFE is the best option, but thats very expensive now days, the whole setup will cost you around 55K

I think, the original 1.0 engine of daihatsu has enough power, it evens give very good pick on 88 dadu charade which is quite heavy than the 86 model. Its also fuel efficiant and gives around 16KMPL in city and around 20 out of city ... plus as its a carby ... the tunning is easy

rest its upto you ... go for 1.3 4efe if you have spare 50k ... otherwise 1.0 is best option.

I will also suggest you to go for Charade 1.0 Petrol engine instead of any other brands. You will not have to do other body/mount modifications in the engine compartment. I am suggesting based on my personal experience, we have Charade 1985 original diesel but already converted to Petrol/cng. Engine is fine with good pick even though it has 14 size wheels with 165 tyres.
