Default city 03 (new shape), MAP sensor failure .... help

    salam all,
my car's RPM is not stable,in idle it fluctuates between 500 to 900rpm. The problem started with CNG and now even on petrol doing the same thing, my mechanic has diagonsed that its MAP sensor is not working properly and need to changed, the ppl at honda told me itwill cost me around 9000 Rs for the new one, & that too expensive for me at the moment...
could i get help on how to fix teh old one or where can i get a cheap alternative, ...
i've tried to unplug the battries for more than an hour as someone told me that the sensor will reset itself but that has not helped much... so please help me, could it be something other than a map sensor..
    car honda city 2003
manual trans. aroung 180k km driven,,
no problem with consumption or tunning what so ever...
    awaiting helpful replies thanks

It is possible that the sensor is just contaminated from age or use of oil saturated, aftermarket air filters. You could try exposing the sensor hot wire (once the sensor is removed from the vehicle) and cleaning it with electronic parts cleaner and low pressure air. Use appropriate cautions. Once the sensor is clean, reassemble and install and check opeation, you may be pleasantly surprised! I hope this information has been helpful.

In case of MAP sensor failure, check engine light must on,however below i am mentioning the function and clean up procedure of MAP sensor,

The manifold absolute pressure sensor, or MAP sensor, is used to measure the amount of air flowing through the intake system and into the engine. The sensor sends airflow rate data to the engine control unit, or ECU, which can then adjust the air-to-fuel ratio for optimum fuel combustion. Over time, the MAP sensor can become dirty with contaminates or dust in the air. When this happens you'll need to clean the sensor.
    1. step 1<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>
Open the hood and locate the MAP sensor. MAP sensors are located near the intake manifold. The exact location varies depending on the year and model of vehicle. The sensor itself is a small black box.<o:p></o:p>
    2. Step 2<o:p></o:p>
Remove the electrical plug running to the MAP sensor. Squeeze the release tab on the top of the plug and pull the connector off.<o:p></o:p>
    3. Step 3<o:p></o:p>
Remove the screws holding the MAP sensor in place and remove the sensor.<o:p></o:p>
    4. Step 4<o:p></o:p>
Turn the sensor upside down on a flat surface so that the sensor end of the MAP sensor is exposed.<o:p></o:p>
    5. Step 5<o:p></o:p>
Spray the sensor liberally with electronic parts cleaner. Remove any visible signs of dust or other contaminates. The electronic parts cleaner will evaporate, so there is no need to wipe it down.<o:p></o:p>
    6. Step 6<o:p></o:p>
    Re-install the MAP sensor.

Hope it will be helpful to u.

    Default thanks

thanks alot for all the helpful tips, however i have tried the cleaning thing but it has not worked so far, i am just hoping that "driving on petrol for few days" might help..
it was all right & only the wire box (holding the wires goin to the MAP scanner) was loose, on moving it the rpm disrupption started, then the mechanic tried to fix and checked all the wires and reconnected them to fix the loose, and after that the original position never came back, now here itgives me hope that my sensor might be good and may be its the wires themselves that are main culprit....... dont know yet but hope i'll find it out..
againg thanks for the helpful tips, still awaiting more thanks

in my case the RPM problem occured due the failure of the calm shaft sensor, dat caused missing on initial RPMS,

the new sensor cossted Rs. 2500, but fortunatly the diagnoser checked the wiring before unpacking the sensor, so the actual problem was that the CNG guy had given current to the advancer wid that wire, nd was a short wire, then we had to install a new advancer which was map sensor operated, evn then a wire was cut. so my advise to u is to check the wiring first.
