Park (P) – This selection mechanically locks the transmission, restricting the car from moving in any direction. However, it is strongly advised to 1st pull the hand brake and then release the foot brake after engaging the transmission in P, especially when the surface is inclined. The reason being, there is only a small pin that locks the transmission and bears the weight of whole car.

Neutral/No gear (N)– This disconnects the transmission from the wheels so the car can move freely under its own weight. This is the only other selection in which the car can be started.

Second (2 or S) – This mode limits the transmission to the first two gears, or more commonly locks the transmission in second gear. This can be used to drive in adverse conditions such as snow and ice, as well as climbing or going down hills in the winter time. Some vehicles will automatically upshift out of second gear in this mode if a certain rpm range is reached in order to prevent engine damage.

Lowest (L) – This mode locks the transmission in first gear only. It will not accelerate through any gear range. This, like second, can be used during the winter season, or for towing.

But remember, continuous driving in any gear, other than D can seriously damage the transmission by overheating. So use them with extreme care and only when it is needed

'P' is for parking. it applies the engine brakes. u cant push the car when its in parking. best to b used when u're done driving ur car.

'R' is for Reverse. it makes the car move in backward direction.

'N' is for Neutral. it releases the hold of engine on tires, and makes ur car free to move to push/pull/its will

'D' is for Drive.it makes the car move in forward direction, in the most fuel efficient way. Ideal for everyday driving.

'S' is for Sport. makes the acceleration a bit faster, compromising fuel economy.

'L' is for Lowest. Moves the car with all engine's power. only recommended to b used when climbing steep slopes.

vario is CVT, although the uses are same, second and L doesnt apply here. it doesnt lock in 2nd or 1st or any gear

u can use D and S at anytime all the time. no difference. only the pedal response in S is different/faster and rpms are held a bit higher longer ( lesser fuel economy )

in L , max speed is 110kmph or something. rpm stays high

    ps
some unconfirmed web source reported that in D, spark plugs are fired sequentially, in S, they are fired at once to get better power/lesser fuel economy. thou i haven't read anything similar from honda officially. someday will check it out.

i agree 100% with u that CITY isnt a sport car,
but according to my knowledge, in all CVT cars 'S' stands for Sport Mode.
in Lancer 1.6, its Ds. it basically means the same, sportier throttle response, it doesnt make the car a "SPORTS CAR" rather makes a bit sportier then Normal.
