Default City idsi - Stalling at low RPMs

    Hey All,

    Here are the symptoms :

When you move your car from static, in the first gear, it stalls and the RPM drops. (the RPM is dead stable at 900 otherwise)

In any gear, including the first and second, the car seems powerless untill it reaches 2500 RPM, it feels like it is suffocated. It accelerates, but very slowly, though the engine produces a lot of sound. As soon as it crosses 2500 RPM, it gets a kick and the acceleration becomes perfect, as if it is no more struggling for air.

The fuel economy has dropped immensely. It used to give 19-20km per liter on highways which is down to 8-10 km per liter.

Here's what has already been done :

    -Tunned (over a dozen times)
    -Replaced clutch pressure plate
    -Replaced Fuel pump
    -Replaced Fuel Filter

And yes, this could be because of dirty throttle body, a bad TPS sensor in the throtle body.

@ storm - disconnecting the battery for a while would be enough to reset it?

1-Change your mechanic, workshop. Your car is messed up by excessive tuning
2-When you get your car back on normal settings and giving good mileage, never, never, never let any mech touch the tuning.
3- Check all plug wires for current leakage
Be polite on the road. Always give way to others, particularly ambulances and pedestrians.

OK, I was logged on via mobile, so couldn't read the above replies.

@Akbar and Chinyoti - The throttle body is cleaned a million times. If you've been to Lahore, you'll know that cleaning throttle body is the first thing you're told by any mechanics (including the pitstop ones) - even if you tell them that it was cleaned earlier today, they'll do it again, charge you for it, and then start making you believe that there is a difference.

@Autophile - From every known, and unkonwn place it has been tuned, by the best known in town (the Cavalry Pitstop too). I don't know how where to go to get those stock settings.

The plug wires and the ignition coils haven't ever been changed - do they need to be changed in the first 95k kilometers?

The real thing is the TPS sensor tobe cleaned in it, theres a posibilty they cleaned it uper uper se.

As City IDSI has 8 plugs probably 8 ignition coils to... so ul to check on each one, one by one.

And on removing any one of them if the car stalls further the coil/wire is working. But if on removing a particualr coil/wire the car doesnt behaves abnormal that particular coil/wire isnt working.

I'll try that out tomorrow first thing IA..seems pretty simple.

However, can it be the reason for no power under 2k RPM? I mean faulty coils and wires would affect at all RPMs, no?

^im not sure about how City works but wen Baleno misfires, it does it at low rpms. On high speeds it cruises a-okay.

    @bango
u can remove the cat converter and drive the car on petrol without engine check light on. it will only come up if in the process the guy damages the O2 sensor

secondly the coil theory makes sense but shouldnt the MIL come up if the coils are failing?

and piece of information for all, throtle body service just makes the iddling smooth.nothing more then that.
Life is short and very unpredictable just like a Quarter mile .....

All the sensors which you are talking about are thoroughly checked and remapped to factory settings.

seems like clogged injectors or a very dirty inlet manifold.. choking off air - sometimes this behaviour is caused by bad spark plugs too - OR bad ground to the cylinder head.

In addition, heavy sludge build-up can also cause these issues.

Hi, do you have an engine light in your car, check the diagnostic codes for this model, year. Hell my 91. prado has an engine light too. That is the first step to know what that car's computer is seeing.
