you can - I forget where but I did come across a statement in the 2002 Accord repair manual to use old spec SJ engine oil in place where Honda MTF is not sold, the concept was to take advantage of the high pressure additives in the SJ rated engine oils.
Honda MTF is pretty thin itself like regular diesel oil and nothing like gear oil.
what additives in particular??? zddp??? I am asking the question becoz my 7th gen civic manual vti's user manual says to use honda mtf or any premium motor oil with viscosity 10w30 or 10w40 api sg or sj. now 10w30 caltex havoline is api sm and 10w40 shell helix is api SN. both are mineral oils. What do you recommend????
The old civic/ballade/integra and the accord/vigor manuals tell you so, The Delo Gold (old name Delo 500) product is chosen because it has excellent anti foaming charecteristics, is quite stout and readily available in Pakistan. Yes it was 15w40 - diesel engine oil.
Later on when Honda started selling manual trans fluid - they claimed to only use theirs (marketing). If I try to count the number kms those same transmissions have done then it would be quite astronomical - every single one never faltered and every single one that was changed out from some ghaslty 140 gear oil to Delo gold was a smooth runner, infact it even gave better fuel economy as there was less drag.
Not all transmissions take gear oil, - e.g. MB manual transmissions take automatic transmission fluid and they work flawlessly, the ZF units used in some land rovers are also like that.
Can we use zic 5000 diesel oil 10w40 api sL as honda mtf???
Assalamualaikum! The best thing is to consult with the Honda Service Centre guys. They will solve your query. I use an Auto car so the best oil for me is the Amsoil Fully synthetic and the Valvoline Fully synthetic, both are made in USA.
