@khitran: You never noticed this before?

I was enjoying a ride with my friend in his week old 2006 Vario and because there was no other sound we noticed it. But in traffic or running engine it is impossible to notice. I wonder what that is and never asked him later if he found out the cause. But now his A/C is giving the smell of soiled socks, I think that is some moss or something but not sure if the two things are related.

Anyways people owning Varios themselves maybe more helpful.
Waiting for the day people start obeying laws of the road while on the road... sigh!

Most car's cabin heating system is based on water. Hot water circulating in the engine is fed into the AC box in a heat exchanger to warm the air circulating in the car. Maybe there is a small leak in the system allowing water to come in. Check the water levels in radiator and also fiddle with the temperature lever on the dash. Turn it to warm and check whether the sound increases or decreases.

The smell is often of coolant or the radiator water itself.

    Cheers.
