Question Honda City Aspire 1.5L MT revving too high

    Hi Guys

My apologies in advance if this has been discussed earlier, but i could not seem to find an answer on PW forums.

Recently bought a Honda City Aspire 1.5L MT, took it to Islamabad from Lahore via Motorway and then all the way back, and I could not help but notice that the car revs too high at normal highway speeds. in my experience with City 1.3L manual, the car stays comfortably below 4000rpm (around 3.5-3.6 mark) at 120kmph, but my car is constantly at 4000rpm throughout at 120kmph whereas I believe due to better Power/Weight ratio the engine should not need to work as hard as a 1.3L vehicle. Due to the same reason, the car is making a lot of engine noise. Is this a cause of concern? mileage as per the ECU as well as manual calculation in-city and on motorway comes around 12km/l

    Attaching a picture showing 4000rpm at 120kmph 5th gear.

Honda City Aspire 15L MT revving too high -1696844

Anyone else has experienced something similar? or is this going to get better after sometime and/or an oil change?

also, despite getting the vehicle alignment and balancing done after a tyre change, I felt that on highway at 120-130kmph the car experienced weird instability like experiencing crosswinds/sideways wind drag/slip. I looked at the trees and they were completely static so most probably not crosswinds. Should I get the alignment checked again? it did not happen throughout the 360 odd KMs on the motorway but happened pretty frequently and randomly.

I haven't noticed what is RPM at 120, but i will note and tell.

So it should the handling should not be affected by the bigger 1.5 engine, I still don't get it how a weaker engine can decrease the stability. Anyways, thnx for the clarification.

Which size and brand tyres are you guys using? Wheel size? Stock size or different? When the pics were taken was the road level or a slight incline? Any head wind?

There could be many factors which dictate the RPM. I own a 1.3 MT City and as far as I remember my RPM at 120 never crossed 4000. I use stock wheels and tyres (175/65-15 EuroStars).

like someone mentioned 1.5 came with a short shift gear box
result is, it gives a crazy acceleration (for pk standards that is )
negative side is, its annoying on places like motorways where you wish it had a 6th gear
Life is short and very unpredictable just like a Quarter mile .....

The pre-face lift model were having automatic transmission where as the facelift 1.3L has a Prosmatec tranny, perhaps that's why the drop on RPM.
I'll check the exact RPM of mine at 120km/h, however as far as I can remember, mine stays well below 4k at 120km/h.
One of the most difficult things in the world is to know how to do something, and to watch without comment, somebody else do it incorrectly.

The one I was driving is my brother's car, given to him by his company. It has Prosmatic emblem at back.

City AT was discontinuem after 2010. All were Prosmatecs after that i.e. same as the facelift.

Fuel economy depends upon your driving style, i can get 16 with A/C and 18 without A/C on motorway/highway easily, the technique is that keep a very light foot on the accelerator and keep a look at instantaneous fuel indicator, try to keep it above 18 and preferably on 20, this will result in a very good average. On 120 i get 14 and above on motorway, you seem to be pushing the car hard and accelerating fast. If you follow the tip above you will get good economy, also your fuel average will improve after 5000 Kms, so no need to worry. Also try to change the tyre to better brand if you have stock tyres and get the balancing and alignment done.
For me, 1.5 is much better due to more power and better handling than 1.3 with a very minor difference in fuel economy(max 1-2 KM/L).
fuel economy is not a concern, the high revving is. does not depend on one's driving style, as once you've reached 120 (either by hard acceleration or soft) the RPM will be stable if you maintain it.

a message for Honda: the additional 23HP should come from the .2L wider bore, not by having to push the engine harder

the Prosmatecs/Auto transmissions have longer gear ratios to make the transmission smoother. my budget as per allocated by the company was that of a 1.3L Auto, which i find very under powered for day-to-day drive. in the same money i was getting a 1.5L MT, and Did not want to spend extra PKR 150K for 1.5 Prosmatec. I guess the trade off between a fun ride within city and a long drive on motorway.

guys, thanks for your valuable feedback, atleast i am clear that there is nothing wrong with this individual car. its a design related matter, i guess i will have to live with it.

those who asked about tyres and rims, well stock alloy rims and Yokohama DB195...wheel balancing and alignment done from Honda. i guess they're useless people altogether.

the power delivery of this vehicle is really nice. So i tried flirting with speed a couple of times for brief periods and the 1.5MT touches 180 really without sweating much. i guess the high revs and bigger engine does deliver power. Since i get more fuel than i can consume in a month, i am not concerned about fuel economy which is not bad within city, and well i dont have to travel on highway every weekend anyways. i suppose it will be better on GT Road etc.
