Default Hand Brake issues with Civic 4 disc brakes

    Hi all,

Is it true that the hand brakes of the 4 wheel disc brakes suck big time ? I am even shy to call them brakes. Please share your experience. In case it can get better then pls do suggest the ways to accomplish that.

    Thanks in advance.

I am not talking about normal brakes. I am talking about hand brake. Normal brakes are superb no doubt.

hmm, drum one should be fine. but 4 wheel disc brakes better than yours is worrying for me. I just replaced new cables on my 2005 Exi and believe you me I have to pull lever with a lot of force to make it stop on small slopes. While driving its impossible to stop it by applying hand brakes. It keeps on driving as nothing has happened. I had santro before this, Its hand brake was superb. Dont know whats wrong, most of the ppl told me that hand brakes of civic with 4 wheel disc brakes sucks big time. Not sure now.

^I used to have a similar issue on our VTi. The lever was stiff as hell and the brakes didn't really lock up all that much.

I got it for 1900 Rs. These are not japanese. These are malaysian. But that doesnt stop it from working. Its a wire and its job is to pull.

As far as other part is concerned, well no, brakes are superb. I cant expect better than these brakes. Its only the hand brakes not working for me. It seems some how right pull force is not transferring to the wheels.

    Ok now the conclusion.

Cables are fine for both rear wheels. Pads are fine

    1. Get rear disks polished. 1.5hours time and Rs. 300 cost
    2. Bottom of the handbrake lever has adjustment screws, get ur handbrake adjusted from there 1st and then from the wheels.

Cable is pulling but even after maximum pull, pads of one wheel are grabbing the disk prior than the other, not letting the handbrake to pull more, hence poor braking due to brakes engaged at one wheel only.

Or they are not getting much grip as the surface of disks became so soft to resist. Polishing is required here.

Now ur saying, pedal brake is fine. Well pedal brake is operated by hydraulic system, so no matter how the pads are, how the disks are, it wud still be much better than handbrake as handbrake is a manual thing

    panic,

Thanks for the reply. I shall check tomorrow if polishing is required or not. I kinda skeptical though. Only thing you said which is making sense to me is the non-synchronous application of brakes. As far I could see, there was only one adjustment screw near the lever and it controls both the wires simultaneously, in short I cant adjust each cable seperately.

I really have to see a civic with 4 disc brakes and with a good hand brake.
