    Default Civic Power Steering Problem/Noise

    Dear All,

I am driving 2005 Civic Oriel with about 40,000Km running. Its power steering hydraulic pump is making excessive humming noise. The pump is, usually, fine when I start but after a few minutes drive and some turns it starts the noise. The noise increases as I increase the engine RPM (which obviously increases pump’s RPM) and when I make deeper turns. I have once changed the pump with a used (kabuli) pump. The new pump worked fine for 2-3 weeks but then it also started making noise. Initially it was not very loud but has increased tremendously with time. Thus I think there is some other problem in the power steering system which is in-turn causing the issues with power steering pump. Moreover, I also think that my steering is bit harder than the other civics.

I need help/suggestions from you guys about following:

    1.spanTimes New Roman";"

Any experiences about this issue and/or any tips/help in the diagnosis.

    2.spanTimes New Roman";"

Recommendation about how to fix it.

    3.spanTimes New Roman";"

Any good mechanic that you guys can recommend for this issue in Islamabad, or even Pindi.

I am counting on you guys so please do help. This noise ruins my drive everyday.

    Regards.

I use Honda's power steering oil and the oil level in reservoir was fine. No drop in oil level noticed, ever.

"Vane Pump is busted" - Can you please be a bit specific? Is it the main hydraulic pump or some other auxilary pump in the system?

I do understand that there is some problem with the pump, but I am more concerned about the reason causing this repeated pump failure/degeneration

Dear SIr, the main pump is the one with the moving part. Low oil level, incorrect oil, moisture have had their effect on the either the pump rotor housing or tne blades themselves. It is best advised that you change the pump from the wreckers.

The reasons are stated above, most common being infrequent oil replacement. ATF tends to absorb moisture which settles down in the lining. Inadequate protection of the reservoir from the elements.

This is most probably due to faulty power steering pump. First of all do flushing of your power steering pump and system and replace the oil with ZIC or Honda P/S oil and then check. If the sound is still coming then get check/replace the pump bearings otherwise replace the pump with refurbished one from Bilal Gunj which will cost you Rs 5000
