Default Recommend best engine oil for 1.8 civic

    Hello members,

I am currently using the Honda company motor oil in my car. I feel the need to change over to a better lubricant, so first of all if I change over to a caltex lubricant will it be bad for the engine. The car has done 12000kms and I have only been using the Honda company oil and advised by certain people not to change the type since the engine is well tuned to it plus the company has made it specifically to suit a honda engine.

I have an EXI that from the word go has not been driven on the honda engine oil apart from the time it was dilivered and completed its first 2000 kms. Will changing the oil impact the engine of the car, please let me know.

    thanx

try caltex havoline or havoline formula both are good.....or u can use any brand of shell...............personally i have been using havoline formula ....original toyota oil is similar to havoline simple ..............i dono think corolla makes its own engine oil they get it from oil companies and stamp their name........any good quality oil will be fine ....car does not become addicted to certain type of oil .....just chnage it on time and thats it............

Guys thanks for your prompt feedback, based upon which i reckon that there is a unanimous agreement upon Caltex and Zic. If Caltex is what Honda uses, I think I can safely move to any one of the grades. One quick question that i forgot to ask earlier, has anyone experienced the quantity of original honda engine oil that the dipstick shows in a 1.8 civic upon the filter and oil replaement. My vehicle dipstick shows a little over half.

    Hmm...

How are you checking ur oil?

Drive your car for like 15 mins than park at a level surface.

wait for 5 to 10 mins take out ur dipstick (after cleaing it)check the level.

It should be near the F mark.

VAQAS1, is this a more conventional way of checking oil. I ususally check it first thing in the morning before starting the engine or once the car has been parked for like 5-6 hours. I feel that the reason for the dipstick showing lesser oil is because the original honda oil quantity in its 3.7 lit packing is in adquate for the 1.8 version. With the filter change I think you need a minimum of 4.2 lits.

Well its better to check engine oil when its warm i mean in the morning in this cold weather the oil will always show a bit low if the engine is not warm.

actually this should be the other way around... leave the car overnight on a level surface and then check the oil level first thing in the morning. or if short on time, the engine should be relatively cold...

with a warm engine, the dipstick will always show less than the actual oil level since some of the oil would have "settled back"... and on a warm engine you run the risk of adding too much oil which can ruin your engine seals for starters...
