    Default Effectiveness of CiviC's Immobilizer

    hi all
i happen to own a Civic 2009, VTi Oriel
just going through different threads, im thinking how effective is the builtin immobilizer anti theft system?
i mean is it really trustworthy and can i forego the use of a mechanical Crook or steering lock and rely only on the immobilizer?
any one who has some knowledge or experience may please put me wise on the subject!

sent from my HD2 without using the handset itself!!

i personally feel that its very difficult to bypass the immobilizer, as you need to hack the ECU for that which is very difficult & time consuming - - Honda immobilizer is very effective.

Immobilizer are very very effective but if you give your keys to someone who has the required equipment then it would be not that hard to find out the code for the key and hence a duplicate key can be generated.

In absence of keys it's gonna take a longgggg time to break the code which is not practical for thieves, so car like these are then snatched on gun point

I think it should be pretty effective. I would certainly not recommend installing a a security system overriding this one as it will probably make it possible for some one to hack into the ECU. I remember hearing this story at one of the Honda outlets (I cannot recall which particular one) about some one losing their master key and going through the ordeal of not being able to get an immediate replacement. I believe you have to provide them with a lot of information before you can get a replacement as the company wants to make sure that its the original owner who is making the request. Its however hard to understand how Honda Atlas expects customers to maintain and retain one key for the life of the vehicle.

You cannot bypass this immobilizer -- period. Go check the 8thcivic forums, even the bypass devices invented still need an original keycut to be placed inside the bypass. The only way to do it involves an HDS unit and I doubt thieves have those or know how to use them.

@Newton "a civic was reported on pakwheels it was stolen when it was parked out side the house."
cud have been an older model...I had a 06 EXi sometime ago and it didnt have an immobilizer
personally i also feel that the immobilizer is very secure

    @Cylestyne
i kneu u would have something useful to contribute as soon as i tagged my thread with "Civic" btw any way to enable the auto door lock/unlock feture? i know its there but its not enabled by default. even the Atlas Honda owners manual is mumb over this, whereas the USDM booklet elaborates the procedure

    auto door lock/unlock feture
Doesn't apply to Thai Civics because our door lock system isn't the same; we use a Denso locking system as far as I'm aware and the USDM has a different one.

    Baleno also had an immobilizer
but lot of Balenos were and are being stolen
anyone having any idea about thet?
There's a big difference between immobilizers now and then. The current is the 5th generation immobilizer compared to 3rd and 4th gen. The Civic has a 5th gen immobilizer; where the entire ecu is mated to one key code. The older generations of immobilizers, like the 4th gen in the previous TSX/CL-9 could be bypassed using a Hondata standalone ecu, that as far as I'm aware isn't possible on a 5th gen.

theives are pretty well equipped now they by pass the trakkers and by passing immobilizer aint a biggy
Trakker runs of a GSM; so any GSM signal jammer which is easily available if you look can block out trakker which is no big deal.

The immobilizer system isn't like that and no you can't reproduce a master key if you have none. I know this for a fact as I had to have my Civic's ECU and everything reprogrammed for a new key set after I lost my original key (and didn't have a duplicate due to a foul up with the financing bank).

The entire procedure is doable by a device called the Honda Diagnostic Tablet (or HDS).

This involves complete reprogramming of the ECU based on a master unlock key code which comes from Japan. This key is unique to each ECU and the ECU cannot be reprogrammed without it. The key is NOT known to dealers / 3S workshops.

I had my entire lock/key/set changed after losing the key and the entire thing cost me over 45,000 RS in 2008. That included changing of the ignition module, re-pairing the ECU with the new key; door lock, trunk lock etc.

So if you think defeating the immobilizer is easy. Yes sure it is; all you have to do is, work for Honda and have some inside contacts with Honda Japan or Thailand

I think all commercial trakkers use satellite tracking system and run with the NAVSTAR GPS. Are you sure when you say GSM?

Though GPS signals can also be easily jammed/altered using a GPS scrambler.

Its a combination of both; the GPS only triangulates the location segments and then its transmitted back using GSM. I'm positive about this. Whatever they're using to keep TRACK of the car is a GSM or similar technology which can be radio jammed.

Think about this; if the relay back system was anything more than GSM-- then the system would not suffer from losing a tracking signal when it goes underground, which clearly is the case with all trakker systems (the car goes underground and the signal vanishes).

309 said: bhai what do u mean by the auto door locl/unlock feature? i didn't get that

the usdm civic has a feature in which u can program the doors to lock or unlock automatically when the car is put out of or put into "P" (auto transmission only)
similarly it can be set to lock when vehicle speed reaches 15kmph, and unlock when engine is turned off..there are different options available
sadly though, the feature has not been provided by Atlas
