    Default Effectiveness of CiviC's Immobilizer

    hi all
    i happen to own a Civic 2009, VTi Oriel
    just going through different threads, im thinking how effective is the builtin immobilizer anti theft system?
    i mean is it really trustworthy and can i forego the use of a mechanical Crook or steering lock and rely only on the immobilizer?
    any one who has some knowledge or experience may please put me wise on the subject!

    Try putting in some other key then and ul noe. (Balenos before 2002 didnt had imobilizers).

    You cannot bypass this immobilizer -- period. Go check the 8thcivic forums, even the bypass devices invented still need an original keycut to be placed inside the bypass. The only way to do it involves an HDS unit and I doubt thieves have those or know how to use them.
    to add i doubt any one besides Honda has that systems, infact in many cases local (karachi) Honda dealers dont have parts avalible and they give u waiting for the parts to be fwded from Lahore or maybe indonesia too.

    So who knoes theyd be sending the car keys to recoded to lahore too.

    @newton, Imobilizer works like a password (which completes the current) (every car has a different value), its not about the special cut key in the Civic and City, so i doubt our theives and lock makers even have any knowledge what a laptop is or what a soft ware is or how to crack a code.
    Get over the fact that Xli lacks power windows, Its an Xli because it lacks thoose features or else it would be a Gli or an Altis if had all the goodies.

    ^^ No Immobilizer in city.
    I also think Immobilizer in Civic 8th Gen is much effective and any local thief cant get passed it, but you know a bomb can be diffused in minutes so why not an Immobilizer
    BTW, Whats up with the immobilizer coming in Swift? How effective is that?

    Duh, Imobilizer is a imobilizer, so may it be a mehran or merc, it works the same way.
    Get over the fact that Xli lacks power windows, Its an Xli because it lacks thoose features or else it would be a Gli or an Altis if had all the goodies.

control unit, if the control unit is inside the ecu, than its pretty foolproof, but what if the ecu is changed and started with the matching key? Changing ecu is not more than a five min job as it’s in the engine bay.

    I remember my Baleno had a imobilzer control unit underneath the steerting column, attached to the fuse box, right next to the central locking control unit, once, God knows how water went in my car,

    Every thing was wet (floating in water) went to mechanic/electritian every thing was dried up, taken out so theres no further damage to any electrical component.

    Even the imobilzer control unit was disconected and removed, when removed for the sake of fun we tried starting the car, (it didnt start) so its some how attached with the ECU as well.

    So incase if some one removes the clip to the imobilizer control unit ur car is still unable to start.
    Get over the fact that Xli lacks power windows, Its an Xli because it lacks thoose features or else it would be a Gli or an Altis if had all the goodies.

    It is very difficult to by pass Immobilizer, and there is no difference in working of this technology in different cars.

    Even technically trained robbers with all necessary equipments cannot hack this technology that easy...

    Below is how immobilizer system works in swift(courtesy swift workshop manual):

    The immobilizer control system is an anti-theft device that immobilizes the vehicle. It stops the engine from
    working and prevents the vehicle from being stolen. It mainly consists of the following components.
    • Engine Control Module (ECM)
    • Immobilizer control module with the built-in coil antenna
    • Ignition key with the built-in transponder
    A code called the transponder code is memorized in the transponder. And, the code is registered with ECM.
    Basically, when the ignition switch is turned ON, ECM reads the code by the coil antenna. Then, if the code in
    transponder in the ignition key does not match with the one registered with ECM, ECM stops the operation of
    the fuel injection so as not to start up the engine and turns the immobilizer indicator lamp ON and OFF using
    CAN communication lines.
    NOTE:
    The authentication process mentioned above is only a part of the entire authentication process. For security reasons, the detailed explanation is left out.

    Trackers have a built in functionality of locking the car if there GSM network signals vanishes for specified (approx 5 min) time . So far my experience with C-track !!!!!!

    a civic 2011 was stolen 2 nights back from inside the garage near our house within 20 minutes. the owner says the car was locked and the crook lock was also on. its just that in pakistan corolla spare parts are a hot deal therefore thieves steal corollas more and dismantle them. otherwise, the day the trend is reversed, its not difficult for professional thieves to break through the civic immobilizer, the way they did so here two nights ago, in less than half an hour

    Sorry dude, first I do not believe that this was done within 30 minutes, secondly, even if it is done, then it MUST be an inside job. Somebody must have duplicated the key.

    Technically speaking, all the code in ECU is encrypted and its private key is burned inside your key. You insert your key, it is read by the electronic equipment, code is used to decrypt the code inside ECU, if key does not matches, ECU does not kicks in. Its just like, you have encrypted hard-disk in your computer and Windows will not start unless hard-disk is decrypted. The only way is to remove the old ECU and install new one for which you have a known key OR someone reprogrammed the ECU - i.e. cleared the ROM and burned with new firmware.

    If some Pakistani has hacked above said, trust me, he should be awarded with Turing Award ( Turing Award - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) - for 'breaking' the Asymmetric encryption!
