    Question Catalytic Converter Problems

I have a Civic 2008, barely done 40,000 KM and I noticed a huge dip in fuel efficiency. I'm generally quick to push the pedal and so my civic's fuel efficiency is low, but recently it touched 8 KM/liter. Thats just shocking!
Also, in second gear, when I have the accelerator lightly pressed, the car jerks every now and then.

I believe I have a bad Catalytic Converter, and a quick googling lead me to this great site:

What Causes a Bad Catalytic Converter? | eHow.com

I have another civic 1.8 (2007 model), which had its catalytic converter problem and we recently got it taken out. The sad thing is there were eight other civics at the repair shop getting the same thing done!

In the US, the catalytic converters have a life of over 100K miles, thats 160,000 KM!! And yet, reading through different posts, it seems in Pakistan the life is around 40,000 KM.

If its a fuel issue, we, the consumers should be fuming. We pay excessively for fuel (no subsidization, in fact huge profit making by the refinery's), and yet the quality of fuel we're getting is crap. Bad fuel is another form of tax, that we pay through regular engine maintenance, health bills due to excessive air pollution of using low fuel, and bad fuel economy!

Some Honda 3S dealerships also do the same job. Honda Classic in I-10 Islamabad is one.
Imran silenser walla at sarya chowk G-8 Islamabad also does this kind of service.

CATCON can be cleaned with high pressure air blown in reverse direction of exhaust flow. Some silenser walla's do it and some 3S dealerships do it. This service is available in Islamabad at Honda Classic I-10 and by Imran silenser walla at sarya chowk G-8.

What about people residing in lahore? Nobody will come to islamabad for cleaning of their catalytic converter! Il try to convince honda fort people into just cleaning it although the last time i went there they were asking to break it

You can clean the catalytic converter with HCL (Hydro-choloric acid), then blow pressurized air through it (in reverse direction of exhaust flow), after that it will be like new.

Even if you dont use the acid and just blow air in reverse direction of exhaust flow, it will still clean it.

Many experts available who clean the catalytic converter at nominal cost. Biggest symptom of choked catalytic converter is poor performance. So best to get it cleaned rather than remove it.

Aoa. Saleem sab, I am Jalil Adnan, serving at Islamabad. My Toyota belta is causing problems of low acceleration and poor performance. I consulted some mechanics , who gave me ambivalent opinions. Some advised to remove cat converter. I just read your post. Will you please advise me what to do. Get it removed, or replaced or get it cleaned. I ll be highly obliged.

Buddy what did you do to resolve the problem. Why I ask is because mine has started jerking every now and then on light throttle. Do let me know if the cat was the problem and how you fixed it.

Aoa. For info of all. Today i went to Mr Saleem (reference post #54 & 60 above) to get my Cat con checked, as i was experienncing low performance, more fuel . The gentleman is really a professional. He throughly checked catcon, by inserting a camera inside just like endoscopy. He also showed me inside situatuon and pictures were also captured. Whole catcon was blocked. Then he cleaned it and reinstall it. Believe me a drastic differeence in car performance. I am really satisfied. He performed all jobs like a professional. I suugest to all not to remove catcon and no need to go to silencer wala or clean it with HCL. Go to him , consult him. You wont regret.

After removing the catcon from car, he cleaned it with specially fabricated hard wired brush. After numorous sessions of cleaninng, he again n again inserted camera inside . And after he finished, he showed me catcon through the camera, it was cleaned.Susequently he reninstalled it. I felt drastic improvement in car power.
