    Default Civic Vti 97 is burning oil, should i change the oil brand.?

    I have civic 97 vti, My car has traveled almost 230,000 the engine is in good condition. 2500 km after last oil changed i saw the level of oil little lower than maximum mark on the gauge. Since there is no leakage issue therefore my mechanic recommended me to change oil to havoline this time and see the result.

    I have been using Caltex Formula oil. Please suggest me what should i do.

    Thanks in advance.

    how much oil ur car is reducing for every 2500km? my car reduces a near to quarter for every 2500 to 3000km and that is quite normal thing...

    have u noticed any smoke from exhaust or any over-heating observed ?

    caltex havoline 20W-50 is a good oil... i'm using that for quite long time, u can switch to havoline from formula.. no issues in that

    Hi V8,

    Yes its almost more or less quarter oil thats burnt after 2500 kms. No smoke or overheating secondly please tell me formula is 10w30 and havoline is 20w50 whats the difference.

    ok, then its nothing to worry about.. just keep on changing oil between 2500km to 3000km mark and engine will deliver best

    "W" represent the viscosity measure of oil. Viscosity in simple words is the thickness of a fluid or say resistance of a fluid... read following link for details
    Viscosity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    so 20W and 10W represents the thickness of a oil... means 20W is more thick as compared 10W

    whereas the other part (30 & 50) represents the temperature/heat resistance of oil... 50 is more resistant to heat as compared to 30 or 40

    Its better to use 20W 50 over 10W30 specially in summers as 20W has more viscosity and more heat resistant!

    Thicker oil has a slight disadvantage of sustaining oil-pressures and faster draining in engine block... but its not much to worry

    Caltex formula is 10w-30w that is ok for new engines or new cars but as your car gets old its better to use atleast 20w-50 in summers like Petromin ultra 7.

    @itexe
    Use ZIC HIFLO, API SM , SAE 20W50. and chang it after ever 4000 km along with the observation of oil level at after ever 1k, after changing 2 or 3 time oil comsuption will be resolved on the other hand read the owner manual booklet of CIVIC too in which oil consuption issue is being described

    SKZIC,

    What's the recommended oil change interval for ZIC A 10W40? I change it after every 4000 kms.

    @Getafix
    Normally ODI depends on engine Mechanical conditon, Driving habits, Fuel conditions, Weather/ Climate, etc..
    Secondly as far as the ODI of ZIC A is concered it can be used atleast for 5000 km no matter how severe are the conditions pervails

    Use 10W-40 of any one you prefer (ZIC A, Shell Helix HX-7, Castrol Magnatec, Mobil), Do get engine flush once before adding new oil.

    Both are viscosity ratings, 10W and 40, This is what is said to be multi-grade, combination of two grade viscosity. There are many oil threads here to study this.
