    Default Strange heat Civic 96

Car - Honda Civic 1996 VTi.

    Mileage - 170k

Issue - the car only heats up while climbing altitudes like Kallar Kahar or Pir Sohawa, and when it is pushed beyond 4k RPM for more than 20-30 seconds.

Strange because the heat needle rises from the centre(optimal) and stops about one quarter from the H mark. It doesn't go beyond that no matter how further we push it.

    Symptoms

water decrease of about half liter per 300-400 km.
    Lights flicker
AC has almost no effect on it...when it'll heat, it won't matter if the Ac is on or off.

    Please help.

this topic brings in sad and bad memories of my vti 98
i spent 1 lac rupees on the car (it all started from the heating issue ) and finally sold it

    1)check fan
    2)radiator cap
3)radiator servicing? which radiator are u using?
    4)thermostat valve?
5)since when do u have this car?has the car heated before?did u ever change the gasket?did u ever face the head?

    Thank you Everyone!

The car is owned by a cousin and I just confirmed it has the stock radiator.

The gasket hasn't ever been changed. How much is the changing cost?

Hash - the radiator cap - how do we know it's the culprit? I mean I've seen it and there are no visible leaks or anything.

And in what chornolgy the work should be done?

Before opening up the head just have the radiator serviced properly and check the radiator cap. Also make the fan direct in case it isn't. If the radiator service doesn't work only then should you open the head.

I also went through the same experience with my 97 vti. It got heated up on the motorway and subsequently i ended up spending around 35-40k on it, ending up selling it.

    Thank you everyone.

We got its radiator cleaned and radiator cap changed. It worked.

The radiator was choked (as per the mechanic - don't they always say the same no matter what?).

Anyway, the cousin drove it for about 10 minutes in 2, and the guage didn't move a whisker. Earlier it started rising as soon as the RPM meter hit 5k.

Now, about the coolant - which one is the best? And does it have to be diluted? Or is it better to put it in concentrated form?

    Good to hear this.
I,ve been using the Caltex Orange one.
    Its good.
I think it would work fine for the Civic.
I get it diltued in 60/40 ratio with water in which 40% is the coolant.
But you should still consult a Civic guy for the correct solution ratio.
One of the most difficult things in the world is to know how to do something, and to watch without comment, somebody else do it incorrectly.

If there is any issues with radiator.
Dont go for any kinda repairs as its only a dose for another month or two.

There are brand new malaysian radiators available on montogemry road and are very nicely built. I think it costs around Rs. 4500 and 200 for replacment.

Fill it up with ""Coolant"" not fake green color waters. reliable source to buy coolant is Filter house or Metro. Toyota coolants are available there.

After all this, things will be smoother and better (y)

Danyal and KV - Thank you.

The culprit was the radiator cap. The friend just filled it up with plain water and after that the temp gauge hasn't moved a milimeter from the optimal position.

I suggested him to add the desi coolant (the ones which comes in 4 liters bottles for 200 rupees)...I think he was wise not to listen to me
