I have bought a honda civic 1999 recently. yesterday its engine check light turned ON & i had to goto a mechanic to get it rectified. He connected the OBD2 connector by using an adapter from OBD2 to 3pin connector on my car. i want to buy a code scanner myself. can anyone tell me what type of connectors are these and whats there use. i found these near my car's ECU.

those blue ones with 2 pin and one with 3 pins are for scanning purpose, on one you hook up the scanner and from other one you can read codes by reading the flashing of the check engine lyt when you short the pins, as far as i know scanners are expensive and this is the alternate for reading codes, you need to have codes list for that, further how on this topic you can google

i have googled it well but not found the exact answer. I've found out following:
    1. This ecu is OBD2 but dont hav a 16 pin connector as found in most OBD2
    2. It can be connected to a OBD2 scanner by using an adapter which connects 3-pin connector to OBD2 port of scanner.
I m not going to use the scanners but an ELM327 cable with adapter which will connect the ECU to my computer & very many free software are available on net for diagnostics. The cable costs not more than 15 Dollars. it is available in bulk in European markets.
The only confusion left is abt the LONG BROWNISH connector in the 1st pic. Can anyone tell me whats that for?????

I think thats pretty much it to get you rolling, its called paper clip ecu code reading, you can further google it by this key word, before you go ahead with it search exact ECU codes for your car model and you'll be good with it.

No use of Big brown connector in first pic
second pic the 2 pin is a useful if you short it.it will give you Morse code and 3Pic is a DLC connector for OBD2 Protocols
