Question Civic Oil Change - Suggestions Needed from Xperts

    Salam to All
I have a 99 civic. I know its quite old but it has a comparatively new swapped D15B.
I was previously using 20w50 mineral oil but as the winter has started i feel that when i start it in the morning the engine feels like struggling hard to rev (feels too heavy) as if the oil is too thick. and as soon as it warms up, all becomes fine.
There is absolutely no mechanical or electrical problem in the car. so we need to discuss oil grades only.

I m thinking to use 5w30 or 10w40 as Honda manual suggest 5w30.
Another doubt is abt the use of mineral or semi synthetic or fully synthetic oil. can i go straight away to synthetics or semi synthetics and then can i revert back to mineral oil without any problem.
as i have read on many blogs/ discussion forums over the internet that switching back to mineral from synthetic is not a good idea.

So kindly suggest oil brand including grading as 5w30 etc as well as suggest to use mineral, semi or fully synthetic oils. thnx

whats the mileage of ur engine?? if its not recently overhauled...u can switch to a synthetic 5w30 and the problem will go away. i use havoline gold synthetic 5w50 and it has a reputation of being among the best....im very bappy so far. Changing to a 10w30 mineral oil will also be fine. U can go for zic A or havoline formula for that grade....

    cheers

Dear go for semi synthetic and go for ZIC A. Don't go for 5-30 or 5-20 as they are too thin as compared to your present oil viscosity. In this way, if you feel that this is not good, you can safely go back to your present 20-50 grade in summer. Do remember that your oil should be from a genuine dealer, not a false copy.

i am using ZIC oil in my Alto 2010 from the very first oil change as 10-40 viscosity is recommended by the maker. I am quite satisfied.

Before the last change, i made a mistake of my life and still don't know why changed GUARD SSS 10-40 Fully Synthetic. My car suddenly became so heavy and i had to change it only after 500 kms. Believe me when i drained this oil to put in ZIC again, i found that the GUARD 10-40 was far far thicker than ZIC A 10-40.

ZIC A is quality oil but its seal is bought by bad people for 30 RS and they use it to seal the fake ZIC,,,this was told by the dealer. He told me another important thing that the people who make fake oil infact do it this way: THEY WITHDRAW 0.5 OR 0.75 LTRS OF OIL FROM ORIGINAL CANE. THEN MAKE THIS DEFICIENCY UP WITH A CHEAP OIL. In this way the color and thickness of oil remains almost same and it does not affect the engine much and they get exorbitant profits even after giving discounts!!

If you're going for ZIC A, I'd suggest you to go for ZIC XQ instead.
    Benifits:
Its fully synthetic with higher viscosity index.
Its 5W40 with lower pour point, which is better than ZIC A or for cold weather. And yet safer, with higer flash point, than many other synthetic/semi synthetic oils for harsh summer.
Thanks to its TBN: 9, you can use it for twice as much longer drain interval and it'd still be good for another couple of thousand KMs.
Its the only ZIC oil that comes with many OEM certification.

went to hyperstar 2day. ZIC XQ was available for Rs 3350/-. couldnt find liquimoly though. now thinkink of going for XQ instead of LM due to availability as well as price difference. 3350 vs 3800

I'm using ZIC XQ in 2005 Civic and 2000 Civic (engine swapped), and recently my cousin's 2005 Cultus (engine swapped) was switched to XQ after much debate. And I'm happy to report that they are all running better than ever and the oil cost is lower in the long run.

I can trust ZIC XQ for a good 10,000kms coz of OEM certification like Mercedes Benz 229.5 which is MB approval for longer drain interval oils for passenger car. MB 229.5 oils, according to Mercedes, are good for atleast 30,000kms and can provide upto 2% fuel saving.
And not only MB, they have certifications from BMW, VW, AUDI, Porsche, Renault, and GM.There's no other ZIC, or any other local oil for that matter, that comes anywhere even closer to that.

if you wanna save some, go for Caltex Havoline Gold Synthetic. Been using it in my 99 civic... you will probably feel an immediate difference over mineral oils... smoother idle/revs... car feels like a breeze.

    works for 10,000km.
    costs Rs.2500/-

Use MOBIL super 1000(mineral) or 2000(if you want semi synthetic). I myself use super 1000 in 98 civic. But make sure it is genuine. I bought 2000 it was not genuine (no seal on the cap) and my car feels heavy.

My advice dont go for synthetic in such an old car. I once used synthetic in 05 santro. Engine barbad ho gaya. white smoke, backfiring etc.

Mobil is the best oil availible in Pakistan, beats up all others in every category so if you love your car there is nothing better than Mobil.

i would also suggest you Mobil 1000 15w40, in mineral oils.

in synthetics, there is no match for mobil 1 ie 5w50. works best in summers and winters both.

However if you want a specific grade only like 10w40 or 10w30 then you have to find that specified grade from different manufacturers..

    5W-50 (only Mobil-1)
    then
    5W-40 (ENOC, ZIC, Shell)
    then
    5W-30 (Caltex, ENOC & ZIC has 0W-30)
    then
10W-40 (Mobil, Castrol Magnatec, ENOC, ZICA, Shell)

1st time full syn. would get dirty earlier and it should if it is genuine as it should remove mineral layer & wax from engine parts.
    don't go for 20W-50.

    Dear,

I have not been in touch with market except I know price..

Change interval depends upon engine condition... But engine itself tells when it's not liking oil anymore (sound), one indicator is colour, full black is deadend, change at dark brown.
and if engine is very old in operation, I suggest to use sludge cleaner before removing old oil and using new. it has been discussed before by me and several other PWMs.

5W-50 (only Mobil-1) Price N/A but u have, Interval: Should be 12K min
    then
5W-40 (ENOC, ZIC, Shell) Price N/A, Interval: Should be 10K min
    then
    5W-30 (Caltex, ENOC & ZIC has 0W-30) Price, 2500,2290,2600, Interval: 8K max
(I used ENOC one and had to change after 5K because it really cleaned engine, there is also one warning that it may happen that full syn oil removes waxes and that stucks in your oil filter and choke it, better use sludge cleaner before)
    then
10W-40 (Mobil, Castrol Magnatec, ENOC, ZICA, Shell) semi-syhth. Price: ~2700 old, 2300,2000,?,2260, Interval: 6K max
