    Default Civic 99 PS Noise

    Salam all PWs

My civic started making GHOOOON GHoooon noise with acceleration a few days back. I went to my mech, he diagnosed it to b the timing belt tensioner bearing. i was not convinced, so i told him to remove the power steering pump belt & drove the car for a day & there was no noise.
Later it was diagnosed as the bad power steering pump pulley bearing. the bearing was changes & for that whole the PS pump needs to b disassembled. after the bearing change the noise vanished. i drove the car to my home & parked it 4 the night. next morning i started the car & the PS pump started giving a loud grinding/ zooon zooon noise as it was low on oil. i checked the oil level it was ok & there was no leakage. But the strange thing is that there r numerous small bubbles in the PS oil in the bottle.
I researched the internet & found out that PS pump is sucking air from somewhere so air is causing the bubbling & the noise.
I changed all the rubber o-rings but nothing helps. The oil is clear & no sludge is there.
I m using Zic oil for PS & never had a problem before with it. My mech told me to put in a small amount of engine oil in PS fluid as it is too thin but i m not convinced with his logic.
The pump's inner parts were put back very carefully as per the Service Manual & there was no visible damage or scratches on any inner part. all new & shiny. The PS system was also flushed b4 putting in new oil so there is no blockage as well.

plz giv ur suggestions. To me the problem is of air getting into the system but from where?

honda steerings do not like ATF btw, and the big odd shaped ring along with the little ring on the back of the pump needs to be changed without question when the pump is dismantled. Its standard procedure for any hydraulic pump.

ask a honda parts jobber for a power steering pump seal kit and very very carefully inspect the pump internals when you take it apart.

    Alhumdolillah
Problem solved. I dismantled the pump the 4th time 2day 2 giv it a last try.
This time I tripple checked every thing. I observed that all the 4 pieces which mount on the 2 thin rods in a sequence Hav 2 holes on both sides. But 1 hole on each piece is very slightly different from the other. I searched the manual again but there was no mention of difference in hole sizes. So I placed similarly sized holes on 1 side while assembling it.
Don't Hav a torque wrench so lightly tightened the housing bolts & mounted the pump back.
B4 attaching the inlet outlet pipes I filled them with the oil to safeguard 4m air bubbles. Then filled the pump with oil with an injection & attached the inlet side. Kept the bottle out of bracket & filled the bottle slowly so that inlet pipe gets filled with oil instead of air. Then attached the return pipe to the bottle & while keeping the bottle as high as possible started the engine.
The pump started grinding again but abt 50% less than b4.
Then did the air bleed procedure & it got quitened. WOW
Took it 2 test drive & only 5% of the noise is there now & no bubbles in bottle. Ithink it will sooth out when I will put in new OEM honda PSF.

so you had put the rotor channel upside down at first? or did you key the pump side housing 180 degrees off?

No the internal plates & cam has 2 holes. I did not place them upside down but 1 or 2 were placed 180 degree turned. 1 of the hole on each plate is slightly elliptical but there was no mention of it in the service manual.
Let's see Wat happens in the morning. Last time also it went quite but started grinding in the morning

Ok it's morning. The pump noise has increased again to abt 20%. But way better than b4. I think Honda PSF will do the trick

which replacement? 4k for the pump or just seals?
& bad news 4m my side as well. the pump is grinding back at 60-70%. the pump noise was negligible at idle at straight wheels but do some MTV grind on turning the wheels. the bubbles also increase as wheels r turned. so i think the main seal needs replacement.
went to karachi yesterday. not 4 repair but outing with family. decided to giv the pump some rogering if i hav to replace it. nothing changed during the travel. Searched 4 a torque wrenched at Hyperstar & Makro, couldnt find it.
Came back 2day evening at 120 km/hr & after parking the car in my garage found out that the pump was absolutely quite. turned the wheels right & left but pump remained quite, no bubbling as well. i think the seals got expanded due to heat & blocked the air 4m being sucked in. washed the car & started it again after 2 hrs. the grinding was back as b4.
So the seals r playing. 2moro i will search 4 identical seals b4 doing anything else. i dont want to waste another 1k on honda PSF b4 fixing the problem.

4k for the whole pump, i hope you came out of this problem soon,

yesterday also changed PSF of my city, took out the reservoir bottle and the pump, changed one clamp which i doubt was letting some fluid out and every thing went pretty smooth

thanks, i would say let this pump be with you for further experimenting and had it replaced as you know where ever there is noise there is grinding and i dont like to think that metal shavings/debri ( if there are any produced ) will run through the system.

The noise reducing now & is almost noiseless when engine is run for some time but increase the noise as the engine cools down.
2day i went to a so called no1 ustaad who is expert in rebuilding PS pumps. He diagnosed that the main seal should Hav been changed with bearing. But as there is no leakage & noise is gradually decreasing so the seals will set in & there is no need to open it again. He is sure that it will b normal in few days otherwise he assured me that he can repair it with guarantee.
    Let's see
