    what is inside this part? and what is its function as it is quite back.. has anyone opened it or got a pic of cross section?
    Also the intake pipe is failing, should i get it changed?Civic 2005 what is this part? see pic -456167

    obviously i know its PART OF intake system since air is entering it first lol,
    i am asking wot is inside this as it is quite big? has anyone opened it?
    i tried opening it but saw that the pipe is already in really bad condition so i put the screws back in

    Its called a sound box, it is empty from inside, it is there to quite down the engine

    there are multiple ways to make the engine less noisy. in corolla they have this in the same box where the Air filter fits. it all depends on the Design of the box. the aim is just to reduce the sound of the air suction. honda uses a different approach, they think that this big empty box will have enough air into it at anytime to complete the demand of the engine and not to suck any thing direct which will set on top of air filter which will clog it. this sound box works same for the air intake system as a surge tank works for the Fuel system of engines which require filtered high pressure of fuel at all times.
