Default My FX consumes more than a civic.....Need Help

hey, guys i need a really good suggestion on how to improve my fuel consumption in my dad's old Fx (mine now)... i have started noticing that it's 25 litre tank finishes after every 164 kms that is less than 8 km/litre, i don't know how to improve it's consumption even tough i got a new genuine carborator for it, but it still gives the same no matter what... and i can't even install cng in my car due to the small rear and bumpy ride although the engine is absolutely perfect... please HELPPPP!!!

    1. Is the Odometer correct?

    2. Is there any visible/hidden leakage in the petrol tank/line/filter (strong smell of petrol)?

    3. Did you check the new carb for any problem?

thanks for the reply testdriver, infact i spend around 25-30000 on this heap for a makeover in the engine, the suspension, wheels, carborator, and the clutch plates to get a better mileage... but it still is the same... my mechanic says there no problem with anything... by the way, the model is a 1983 japanese assembled.

wow, 1983...thats wat?...23 years or so.... about time u ring papa up and ask him for a new ride...maybe the 'old' factor cud be the cause of such high fuel consumption.

    @ ammar

Somehow I dont trust your mechanic.......a 1983 FX is a very nice car. Maybe, just maybe ur mechanic wants to grab it from you when u make a 'fed-up-of-the-damn-heap' sale!!

I think it should give u a mileage of at least 10 km/litre if not more.

Maybe you should get it tuned by a second person under your watchful eye.

    @Humy

I cant agree with the old factor. If a car is built right it must give good performance no matter what.

well @ammar_sethwala its the old technology factor. I had starlet 1984 and it used to give me 9-10 km and that too in year 2000 and everything was perfect and then when I came to know that margalla was giving 13 km so We changed our car to khyber and that started giving me 15 km the reason was the engine was new and five gear transmission i guess. What ever we do we cannot repalce old compnents of engine whoes life has expired and due to which car consumes more petrol so therefore my brotherly advice is either to change engine which is not feasible or change car switch to mehran that would give you somewhat better milage

Ahan, well but isn't 8km/litre a bit too less for a 800cc car that too a FX? hmm, maybe after few years i could just change the engine.... 'cos i don't think i'll be even able to change to a mehran at the rate i m going.... told the reason in my last post

Yes 8 km is less. It should be 10 or more as I said.

My father has a 86 FX and it gives *I think* a good 12-13 km/litre. Im not sure about this but I could check in a few days when Im back in Karachi.

Anyway that FX of ours has done just over 100k kms recently and has all fuel/service records from day one!! So it cant be compared to most FXs on the road.

The sad thing about Suzukis is that spares are of very cheap n substandard quality so even if you fit a brand new part you can be sure what you have.

Mechanics can tak eyou for a ride by fitting cheaper/seconhand spares and claimng its the best in the market. Its good to shop around and research yourself when u go for any major work.

I wont be surprised if the carburettor is a second hand or substandard third party unit. I have actually SEEN mechanics do this.

Sorry my post is not informative or helpful to you as I cant give u specific tips to follow.

All I can say is take your car to another mechanic.....someone known to you or your friends etc and just ask him to tune your car saying its giving you bad mileage. Keep an eye on him and see what he does and see what comes up. Whatever he says take with a pinch of salt and report here.

    Regards.

    And yes...

Changing the engine would probably be the worst thing to do.

From what you say, its your dads old car, I believe yu have had it for a long time?? You would be familiar with this car (and the engines!) hstory and would have hopefully treated everything with respect. A second hand engine comes with a shady history and most probably has taken years of abuse and nothing else.

    @ humy

No I certainly dont think that the VVTI etc cars are not more fuel efficient. They are. What I was saying is that an FX in good condition should give more than 8km/litre. Its not that as the car grows older it consumes more petrol. Its an old car with an engine in bad shape that consumes more petrol.

    @ Ammar

Is your FX's mileage a genuine 80K since new???? I would be very surprised. And if it is, the car should be in very good condition, provided its been maintained well. But you did say the car recieved major work and a carb change, so I doubt the figure.

An odometer is the mileometer, the one which shows the cars mileage.
