It's melted and was probably blocking the exhaust. Please ignore my thumb...

Bro when i was 4 years old, my thumb got pressed between a door and it is like this since then . And it is not all that came out. It was more but i did not got all of it out. Just enough to make a free flow of exhaust. Taking all of it out would adversely affect the fuel economy as the engine would run rich then.

Don't know when it melted but my car has mileage of 98,000km. I think it melted due to cng as it runs the engine hotter as compared to petrol.

yeah its due to CNG. the CAT in civics is placed very close to the engine. in city, its roughly below the hand brake so the exhaust gas gets much cooler until it reaches theat CAT.

this failure happens when the cat gets raw unburnt fuel dumped into it, e.g. leaking injector, bad spark plug or flooded engine. The converter must have been glowing red when this happened.

btw you can try to acetylene burn this - and it wont melt, google the temperature of the oxy acy gas flame - then imagine what sort of temperature this experienced.

I saw an exhaust pipe welder taking out the Cat converter out of a vitz, he put the welding torch directly onto it for several minutes, nothing happened to the honey comb structure at all. I might have a picture somewhere in my HDD.

Bro i did not go to any exhaust repair guy. My mechanic took a bit of the honeycomb out by breaking it to ensure a smooth flow of exhaust. The entire cat was not taken out as it would have resulted in annoying whistling sound, lean air/fuel mixture and probably an oxygen sensor error code. Although the sound did increase a bit and is now is similar to a xli accelerating

Xulfiqar bhai aur merey thread pe..... . Meri toh zindagi he badal gayii... . Thanks for your view on this. What do you think caused it ? As to my knowledge, the car never got overheated and the engine is in sound condition. What do you think caused the melting ? Could CNG be the culprit ?
