    Default O2 sensor - civic 2000

    Hi all!

Can someone confirm where's the primary o2 sensor in 2000 civic (Pakistani)?

The car in question is a friend's VTi and he's getting 8 kmpl on highways and he has checked everything else so i had a doubt it may be his O2 sensor messing up the ECU and ultimately giving a poor fuel economy.

    Thanks in advance.

P.s. i am referring to the PRIMARY o2 sensor.

It takes 8,460 bolts to assemble an automobile, and one nut to scatter it all over the road.

There's no O2 sensor in Pak 6th and 7th gen Civic.

What kind of check ups have you done already?
    Valve clearance?
    MAP sensor?
Plugs for correct colour, gap, and heat range?
    Timing?
    Injectors?
    Fuel lines, pump etc?
    TPS calibration?
General tune up, intake cleaning etc?
    Compression?
    Cooling and Lubrication system?

am I missing anything? Are you?

    Compression?
    Cooling and Lubrication system?

Engine operating temperature is normal but radiator needs to be flushed...

How about Torque Converter clutches? They feel fine?

Well, I don't think it'd do more than 10 anyway. What's on the odo?

Is there any kind of smoke? Does it rev properly? Any sort of hesitation through rpms range?

UIV - Mine (identical to umarsattar's civic except mine's a hard top) in Pakistan does 13kmpl on highway easy at 120kmph. And I'm basing this SD on dozens of RPs from really really frequent visits from lahore to faisalabad and islamabad.

try rechecking the mileage calculation, maybe there's a mistake there...

Maybe he's got bigger wheels so the meter shows lesser miles than actual. or is both cars identical?

^^ Lets assume OEM wheels are 185-65-R14

    14" Rim: 35.56 cm
    Side wall: 18.5 x 0.65 = 12.25 x 2 = 24.05cm
    Wheel: 35.56 + 24.05 = 59.61 cm
    Circumference: 3.14 x 59.61 = 187.175 cm = 1.872m

Lets suppose the car originally does 10km/l, but with the new wheel W, it only shows 8km/l on odo.
Hence, the old setup: 1.872 meter x 10 km/l should be equal to the new setup: W meter x 8 km/l.
    so
    1.872 x 10 = W x 8
    W
    = 18.72/8
    W
    = 2.34m
Circumference of new wheel = 234 cm
    Diameter of new wheel = 234/3.14 = 74.5 cm
Diameter of new wheel = 29.3 inch

The new tyre has to be something like:
    315-50 R17 or 325-35 R20

    Possible?

However, if he's running rather modest:
    205-50 R17
    Rim size: 43.18cm
    Tyre walls: 20.5 cm
    Wheel size: 43.18 + 20.5 = 63.68 cm
    Circumference = 3.14 x 63.68 = 199.955 cm = 2m
Using old equation, with new variable R i.e odo reading

    1.872 x 10 = 2 x R
    R
    = 18.72/2
    R
    = 9.36 km

So if he's using 205-50-R17 his odo would only show 9.36 km for every 10 km

... so in my opinion, we can safely rule that out.

What could happen is if his odo were to read in miles
8miles per litre = 12.8 km/l which is perfectly acceptable.

hmmm, your right. need very big awkward rims to affect mileage.

Also, there's another possibility that maybe problem car has big wheels while bango's car has smaller than original wheels...

I think we need to know wheel sizes for both of the cars.

Another important thing, both cars need to be weighed as well...

plus maybe the problem car has a big spoiler on it, that could ruin mileage. Also it has been mentioned that the problem car is sunroof model, so maybe he has the sunroof open on motorway, that could increase drag alot..

we need more info about the cars.

The cars are identical - similar wheel size, no spoiler, the only difference is the sunroof, hell even the color is the same since you're going to those details.

Anyhow, why I am reconfirming about the O2 sensor is that usually O2 sensor is referred to as the one on or after Cat. However, there's supposed to be a primary O2 sensor, and a secondary O2 sensor. The on-or-after Cat is the secondary O2 sensor which is for emission readings only. I am sure our PKDM will be deprived of that.

However the pre-cat 02 sensor is usually on the headers, or at times on the exhaust before catalytic converter, which signals to the ECU information about the burning (if there car is running too lean, or too rich).

May be it is called differently, but I am pretty sure it is essential.

I've heard it doesn't have O2 sensor anywhere. I think its MAF sensor or something. And I think its on the intake side...

As far as I remember my Civic 2000 used to have an O2 Sensor near the exhaust manifold!
