    check tire pressure
    replace Air filter
get plugs cleaned from a mechanic
use quality Engine oil and change it after 3000 km max.
Make sure your car is tuned properly and there is no check light.
Use ac only when its needed.
Since its auto try driving it with a light foot and let it shift to 3rd and 4th gear asap

5km/l is too low. i am getting almost 8 km/l on my 2008 pros civic.

as mentioned by others few basic tests, air filter , spark plugs and tire pressure. other than that get your CAT convertor checked from a mechanic as clogged CAT drastically decreases the performance as well as KM/L.

i would say get the plugs cleaned or buy new / air filter and the cat converter might be the culprit --i had the same car used to give like 8.5km in city

the new civic fairs no better roughly 9.1-some times touched 10km in city . but i have 17inch alloyes 245 tyres so that might be another cause of low mileage.

out city it gave with a/c on average of 13.2 km aint bad though speed of car was constant like 90-100km max .not above

8th gen Civic manual. 71k km ran. Catalytic converter fully functional Masha ALLAH.
doing 10.5-12 in city with normal foot and full time AC.
on long. 630km in one full tank till reserve light with full time AC and speeds ranging from 100-140-160. Mostly kept between 100-120.

Your car might have some serious issue. Do get it thoroughly checked. Get its coils and plugs checked also. and check resistance of plug wires.
