Default Honda Civic 2000 AT 1.6 poor fuel average

    Dear Experts.
My car is giving only 6 km/l despite every effort.
The car is driven on petrol since day one it used to give 10km/l.
My car is totally stock and I am running 20W 50 grade oil which the car is not reducing and no harsh driving.
A mechanic advised about changing injectors.
Your advice and experience will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Car is driven 98000 km.
I have done computer tuning from a reputed workshop.
Can you tell me about wideband and EGA plus any workshop in Islamabad/Rwp.
Will using injector cleaner & replacing underhood fuel filter help.
A mechanic is also telling me to replace transmission oil with its filter replacement according to him when filter is clogged
car pulls heavy & consume more fuel.

    1. Change your ATF. Recommended change interval is 50,000 km for severe conditions. Make sure you use GENUINE HONDA ATF.
    2. Yes getting your injectors cleaned using ultrasonic method might help in improving the mileage. Also replace the fuel filter as your car is almost 13 years old and filter might be clogged with rust/debris.
    3. Clean your MAP sensor. You can do it yourself.
    4. Inspect your spark plugs. Change if necessary. No need to get expensive Iridium/Platinum ones.
    5. Inspect and adjust your Valve clearance/Tappets.
    6. Switch to 10w40 or 10w30 oil. Thicker oil means more fuel consumption and if your engine does not reduce oil why use it.
    7. Make sure your radiator fan is automatic and NOT direct.

The above mentioned things are will help increase the mileage.
And although it does not effect fuel consumption you should replace your timing belt/bearing as well.

changing (cleaning) of the ATF filter in that car means

1 - remove transmission from car
2 - break it down completely (like overhaul)
    3 - clean filter
    4 - repack transmission
5 - install back in car.

meanwhile you can admire or curse Honda for designing it like boneheaded chickens.

Thank you very much ToxicDevil & Xulfiqar for you valuable input.
If I change stock injectors with that of 1300cc engine how much fuel can be saved. My mechanic is convincing me to do so, he is saying that he had done it before without any problems in other cars. But my concern is check engine light & software problems.
    What is your opinion?

the Honda ECU does not know of what duty injectors its firing as long as they are 13 ohm impedance per injector.

Thanks Xulfiqar, so other injectors can be swapped.
But will it make any difference in fuel economy? Does fuel delivery to cylinders influenced by injector size or is it fuel pump?
I mean if fuel pump and injectors are swapped to lower fuel ratings theoretically fuel consumption can be reduced.
In simple words opposite of turbo setup in which more fuel is delivered to engine.
    Whats your kind opinion?

trimming down the fuel can result in overheating the engine and even knock as the mixture can go too lean.

    Thanks Xulfiqar.
your post has cleared every thing for me.
How much speed can be expected from AT in complete stock condition with fuel cut at 5k RPM?
Mine goes max at 130 km/hr on petrol with 4 passengers and no CNG kit and the speed come down to 120 at slight ascend e.g. on motorway and car feels heavy and sluggish.
Mechanics have given their verdict that what else could you expect from AT, its fine.
Could this also explain heavy fuel consumption or point to some problem in fuel supply?

130 km/h is literally pathetic for your car, in good tune your car should be hitting 160 km/h before the engine starts to wheeze out, Find better mechanics and ensure that you have the correct ECU in your car, most cars in Pakistan have swapped ECUs - the original ones burnt out when flooded rain water submerged the car.

Most Honda ECU's are hot swappable (same connectors) but are tuned for different engines. The other bit is that if someone has tinkered with the fuel trim pot without paying attention to actual exhaust output will cause the engine to run very weak. Running the engine cold will cause such issues, and in A/T cars - if your ATF is old and dark then that also causes other problems like torque convertor not locking etc.

You have a horse and the speed you are telling is not according to the standards of your car.

Have you checked your disk pads?

Xulfiqar I have a civic 2003. 1.6 AT oriel. It's giving me the same issue and same mileage. Got the fuel filter and feel lines cleaned. Cleaned the injectors. Spark plugs and oil brand new from company. And ATF too. The engine runs extremely smooth and no jerks or missing. Gives top speed of more than 160. The tepid is fine. Don't know about head valves. Got computer tuning too. It still gives me 6. I live in karachi. Any suggestions?
