    Default Civic 97 ABS setup

    Hi guys,

I know its been discussed many times but I did try to find out on the forums and the only useful bit of info is quoted below. Further more some guys were saying that disc brakes are better than ABS. Those were some old threads and I really couldn't find out what I wanted to know. Your help will be appreciated.

My civic is 97 vti automatic. I think front are brake pads and rear there are drums.

I'd like to know the cost of the complete setup.

    1) I heard/read somewhere that it'd cost around 10k, is this figure right?

    2) Will it include all the things that have been quoted below?

    3) Will there some update be required in the ECU?

    4) Can I get the ABS light for civic 97 meter?

    5) What does the light indicate? That setup is fine as a whole or not?

    6) Should I go for ABS or disc brakes?

There are some other queries as well.

My break oil bottle had some residue settled at the bottom. I poured in brake oil and it all became blackish. If you look at the top edge of the bottle you can distinguish the yellow clean oil with the muddy black oil. Though mostly it is black in the pick cos I just stirred it with the bottle cap :p Is this ok or should I get it cleaned and if so then how?

2ndly alot of carbon gets accumulated on the battery terminals. I've cleaned it alot of times but to no avail. Well my mechanic added some grease to the terminals :p what should I do to avoid the carbon forming?

P.S: After the grease it isn't

You are probably wondering that the engine bay is not clean and he deliberately hid it, well alright I did do that initially it's actually very dirty as you can see, yeah sue me :p

But in all seriousness guys need answers for these queries.

    Regards,

I'd like to know the cost of the complete setup.

    1) I heard/read somewhere that it'd cost around 10k, is this figure right?
    No, more than this

    2) Will it include all the things that have been quoted below?
~30k - Complete suspension (shocks, springs, steering rack, control arms, trailing arms etc) front disk, rear drums or all 4 disks fitted with tone rings and abs wheel sensors
~5k abs modulator unit or pump
~5k for the abs control unit and fuse box
~3k for the abs brake booster and master cylinder
~500 for the proportioning control valve
also add around 5k for the mechanic and electrician work

    3) Will there some update be required in the ECU?

No, though both controllers share the same DLC (data link connector)

    4) Can I get the ABS light for civic 97 meter?

You can wire any unused light in the cluster or better buy a new meter with abs light

    5) What does the light indicate? That setup is fine as a whole or not?

Sends out the blinks (same like the engine check light) which correspond to the particular DTC, where each code has its own significance

    6) Should I go for ABS or disc brakes?

ABS ensures effective braking so that the car do not skid due to locking of the wheels, can't be related to disk or drums as it comes both in all disks and rear drums brake setups

    Don't quite understand this sentence.

So that makes it about ~20k for the complete installation of the setup. I thought you said it won't be more than 10k so still confused about the cost bit.

    Thnx for the reply.

P.S: So your EG done? When can we see the final pictures still waiting for those and interior pics weren't complete either. Been waiting for a proper shoot and completion pics for a while

    Don't quite understand this sentence.

Sorry I forgot to mention here that this the amount for which I bought complete suspension for my car (92-95) civic. It was quoted here just to give an idea that how much the abs setup will cost you. Obviously, you don't need the complete suspension, in fact all you need are the front and rear brake setup with hubs and abs sensors. So these things may cost around 10k as compared to the 30K for the complete suspension setup.

So that makes it about ~20k for the complete installation of the setup. I thought you said it won't be more than 10k so still confused about the cost bit.

I think you have missed the mechanic/electrician charges and also add another 2~3 thousand for some unforeseen and miscellaneous items like brake oil, few steel tubes for the brake lines etc. (brake lines are also available uncut and undamaged).

    Thnx for the reply.

    You are always welcome

Thanks for the reminder brother. Ahumdulillah, brother it has been done almost and I am enjoying it a lot. Yes I know in the very last picture I showed it up to the center console only as by that time I didn't liked my old gear knob and the gauge cluster was also not there because of few modification to be finalized by that time. Meanwhile, I have bought a lot more rare OEM stuff for it, InshaAllah I will soon share their pictures and update the thread.

ABS modulator unit (pump) is also lying with him don't know about the ABS wiring with its controller and fuse box. However you can get its wiring and the controller from khan wali (03335604663) though he is a bit expensive.

Things go worse when they are modified/altered out of specs. ABS was actually offered in JDM 96-00 civics so it will be just a retrofit process, provided it is done professionally. Old non-abs brake system will be totally replaced with new abs one with no alternations required*. Tricky part will, however, be the brake lines which will be rearranged in the engine bay only if the abs brakes lines are not found. And the brakes will still work like before no matter if the abs fails to engage due to some electrical or mechanical fault.

What shabbir bro said and further more I'd like to refer you to your signature

but honestly I think it'd be more hectic to first sell my car(which isn't mine its my mom's I get to do my thing on khyber ) then look for a good one which in itself would be a difficult process.

Brother I have driven my friends 2006 VTi and Reborn as well as many other JDM cars like Axio, Vitz, Premio etc.

I have a 96 VTi Auto as well as 2005 EXi as daily driver I have noticed that the brakes of civic are comparable to all JDM or local cars with ABS.

The downside is that all my friends with ABS have problems after every year or two due to sensor failure, pedal modulation etc.

While my non ABS Civics have absolutely no Problem even after 200,000 KM, its like day one.

Let me give u a better way to spend:

Buy Nissin genuine brake pads, check Brake rotors, clutch master cylinder, brake booster and disc for alignment and bleed the brakes for air.

Nissin genuine organic pads will cost you 6K / pair rear and 8K / pair front and they are good for 60,000 km or 5 years unless you try to be Alex Zanardi.

My 96 VTi brakes perfectly even at high speeds of 160km/hr.

Get oversized discs of JDM Si Civic from kabar and you are good to go.

It will all cost you less than 50K.

Here Honda 3S offers retro ABS fitting in Eagle Eye (2004-06) Civic but they charge roughly 60-70K donot know about 6th generation.
All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.
