Oh damn. Don't know how you got such averages in the 9th Gen. I always had 6.3 average in the city with the 9th gen, I kid you not. Didn't have a heavy foot on the pedal, ECO on, & AC on too. Was fairly new like about 4500km when I sold it but that was the last I got from it, never went above 6.5 whenever I drove it.

My average settled after first 10,000 kms. Initially it was always around 9
But never went under to 8 no matter what. Even with a heavy heavy foot with constant high fun rpms gave 9-10 in City with AC

Depend's a lot on driving technique. My sister's 2014 passo averages 6 kmpl in city driving. But when I take over, I've get 24kmpl on highway and 17.5kmpl in City driving every single time...

Yes driving technique does matter as well. My dad has the capability of regularly fetching 11 from an 8th Gen Prosmatec in local with AC and 16.5 on motorway with AC while his younger brother (my chacha) is fetching 18 on highway from his 9th Gen Prosmatec which was absolutely hard for me to believe and I wonder how possibly can a 1.8 9th Gen fetch 18 on motorway regularly.

Before many come storming at me saying this is a lie, well you have the right of not believing me

I believe that such mileages are possible. The key is to build speed slowly and not too many downshifts while trying to overtake each and every car in front of you.
Be polite on the road. Always give way to others, particularly ambulances and pedestrians.

Further to the discussion on CVT and gear shifts compared to that of grande, I extracted the below snapshot from civic owner's manual. Now, I am not exactly sure how the "S" mode works but it says better acceleration and engine braking, while in a grande there is only one mode "D" and for increased acceleration you shift it to the so called "manual". Any thoughts on how this S mode would change the transmission response?

Yes these mileages are possible I myself has kept gli 1.3 for 1.5 years and always got 15+ average on highway and 13+ plus in city drive.. And now I have premio 1.5 with CVT it's giving 14+ in city and 16+ on highway.. And I can surely say that 1.8 civic X with CVT can easily do 15 or 16+ on highway at least..

Now, I am not exactly sure how the "S" mode works but it says better acceleration and engine braking, while in a grande there is only one mode "D" and for increased acceleration you shift it to the so called "manual". Any thoughts on how this S mode would change the transmission response?

The S mode restricts the gearbox to a limit like D3 or 2 in a conventional Automatic therefore stopping the engine to drop RPM and give powerful ratios that help in engine braking downhill as well.
And L is like a standard 1st gear restricted to further let the RPM stop from dropping by shifting to a more forward gear automatically while travelling downhill, hence increased engine power.

I think it is slightly different than that, not sure though. Correct me if I'm wrong, in a normal prosmatec D3 would use gears 1, 2 and 3 only and won't engage 4th. If this is true then, S mode should be different as it when coupled with CVT would use a infinite gear ratios but slightly hold a particular ratio longer or something for better response.
