Default API grading for honda civic 2005 manual vti

i have recently purchased a 7th gen honda civic 2005 eagle eye manual transmission. the car is petrol driven. the previous user did not use the oil as per the requirement of the car and poured it randomly. I have the owners manual which says use api grade SG, SH or SJ only. Nowadays, most of the oils are either SL, SM or SN grade. My question to all and especially @Xulfiqar bhai, @goodman2 and @Storm is that can i upgrade to SL, SM and SN grade or will it deteriorate my engine. I had gone through some threads which stated that newer grades lack zddp which is essential for some engines. My cars engine is D16w9.

Its definitely a Honda D engine; they look quite similar. Tell you what; open the valve cover and look for that wheel attached to the rocker arm. If its there, its a roller rocker. If not, its a flat tappet.

    fail how ?

Any engine which fails at 60k just because of changing to a newer API oil must have severe issues prior to the change. Or the oils must have been counterfeits.

I was using semi synthetic on a 225k driven Honda City
I am using Fully synthetic on a 132k driven Honda City Vario. (switched from mineral at 122k)

I have only witnessed improvement in overall drivability. I have made everyone around me to switch to synthetic and on the top of my head , they include 2001 AE101 with 150k, 125k 2004 baleno,130k driven 2005 corolla xli, 55k driven honda civic 8th gen.

5w-30 is among best oils and for best fuel economy also.
If no problem, then keep using it. Don't change.
Havoline formula is 10w-30 and 20w-50. That will not suite much if your engine is already happy with 5w-30.

U are lucky that even with such a high mileage, ur car is running fine on 5w30. Shift to formula 10w30 if the car starts to decrease oil

No oil reduction at all. No leak as well. Engine is fine, as totally driven on patrol. Should I shift to Havoline formula?

actually shell is superior to havoline, no need to switch (for all havoline lovers, my car has done 200k on havoline , i am not saying its bad)

Sir, Xulfiqar, has recommended to use shell heilix hx7 5w - 30. Some other PW members are recommending Havoline formula. Now I am really confused. Pls advise me finally what to do, as tomorrow I intend to change oil. Regards.

Sir , I really need your help please. I travelled from Islamabad to Lahore through motorway a couple of days ago. In next morning at Lahore when I started my car, a strange noise came from engine, like some thing broken piece of mettle or marble is inside engine, and it's rattling right and left and striking against the inside walls of engine. I went to Honda pit shop at Dha, but enroute when the motor got warmed up, the sound disappeared. I showed the car to tech at Honda, but no sound. Then I waited to cool down the motor. Then again the sound appeared.
Tech checked every thing including plugs, tapets, timing belt etc but no cause was found.
Consequently, he said that apparently every thing is OK, and engine head might be opened to detect further.
    Now, I concluded:
The sound occurs when car is cold.
When sound occurs the engine vibrates and loose power slightly.
When it gets warm up, no noise, it drives smooth, pick is excellent.
Sir, I am really troubled. Day after tomorrow I will be going back to Islamabad. Please help me and advise me what to do.
    Anxiously waiting for expert opinion.

seems exactly like the case my charade had.... and not good...

open up the oil sump from the bottom. drain and clean up the oil... then check if there is any play in the big end bearings
the problem is not our govt... its the people..

I would now suggest that you shift to a more viscous oil. Havoline formula 10w30 for now. If the sound still appears then shift to any 10w40 oil. And I would recommend that you shift to mineral oils because I think that at such high mileage the synthetic technology is no good for your ride. This is just my observation. Senior members and experts can better help to rectify ur problem

If the engine is creating sounds, switch to a thick mineral oil.

Its the same as, "switch fan to direct, remove thermostat for heating problems". Or, "cat converter finished? Remove it instead of getting a new one".

Sir, it s not matter of engine sound. Motor/engine is smooth. Couple of days ago, when I started in the morning it gave a strange sound of as if some metal pieces are inside engine wall. Sound is not continuous. It comes in intervals and vanishes when engine us warmed up.

start your cold engine and then press the clutch. See if it still appears or not and let me know

its better to read the entire comment before reaching to a conclusion. I said that it was my observation and xperts can definitely shed light on it. So unless you are providing something helpful to the person, this facepalm was useless
