Default oil for civic exi prosmatec 2004

    hello guys,

I have recently purchased a civic 2005 exi prosmatec in karachi. Its a petrol driven car with mileage 140,000 kms approx. I will be going for an oil change in a couple of days. The previous owner was using zic A 10w40, which i think is very thick for my ride and will not give me the best fuel economy. My neighbour has a 2005 vti manual and uses these two oils:

    1. ZIC 0W (0W-30) 100% synthetic
    2. ZIC A+ (5W-20) or (5W-30) 100% synthetic

I was aiming to use zic xq 5w40 but my neighbour insisted on the above two options as he says that zic xq 5w40 is fully synthetic and not a wise option for my car.
I am seeking the maximum fuel economy and the best acceleration and performance. Please recommend me an oil from these options ONLY for an all year use in Karachi. I am a resident of Karachi. I will be very grateful to you all. I expect an informative and supportive response since I am new to PW and this is my first post. I am also attaching a snapshot of the oil grades and temperature coverage from my civic's owners manual. Plus plz also tell me the difference between 100% synthetic and fully synthetic oils? ZIC mentions zic a+ and zic 0W as 100% synthetic and zic xq as fully synthetic. What is the difference? Is it just a marketing gimmick??? and is zic a+ 5w20 or 5w30??? I have seen both of these viscosities at a shop nearby

    Regards,
    Ayan Siddiqui

Sounds like the tappets aren't adjusted properly. Thick oil hides problems like these, but thin oil reveals them.

HX7 is well within the range of manufacturer requirements. If the engine is making sounds, the oil is not to blame; something is not right in the car.

Did the previous owner happen to mention that it was a "sealed engine, never opened, no work required?". Did he give any sort of sevice history?

Obviously if someone uses 5W30 or 5W20 in high mileage motor or abused one so engine will make noise, or if engine was previously fed on 20W50 and new owner pours 5W30 then it'll consume oil and sound strange. One of my friend was amused by modern synthetic oils and kind of their packing he poured Mobil 1 5W30 fully synthetic in his Corolla 2E having 150k km and car started to smoke blue, went to mechanic and engine was busted had to overhaul complete engine.
If engine consumes oil more then 1L after 1500km then move to Havoline 20W50 best alternate for weak motors and stops reduction to some extent

The thing is if the previous owner was using mineral oil e.g 10W40 or 20W50 and someone pours 5W30 synthetic in it then engine shouldn't be blamed nor oil its you who made the mistake. If the engine is driven for 100k km on 20w50 and we pour 5w30 then its not good. I have been using fully synthetics in Chevy Small Block 6L V8's till 500k km but the thing was they were driven from day one on 5W30 fully synthetic

The previous owner mentioned that he had poured zic a a couple of times but mainly hx5 was used

    Any non-anecdotal evidence for this?

The car was running on thick oil previously now you have poured a thin one so the noise is from tappets and after running a few kms you will see that there is reduction in oil too. best option is stick with Zic A 10-40 or change to havoline 10-30.
I went through the same issue with my city 2006 so now i am running Zic A .

the thing is car feels lighter when you drive it on a lighter oil after heavy oil and oil reduction occurs as engine is used to 20W50 and you disturb its routine. From lighter oil you can shift to heavy oil as the time passes and odo clocks more then 100K or 150k but from heavy oil if you use low viscosity oil like 5W30 5W20 then engine may reduce upto 1L for 1000km. Best bet is to stay on same viscosity or if it is 20W50 driven and engine condition is fair enough you may use 10W40 but anything lighter then this will be harsh for engine.

that is not necessary, we bought a toyota corolla gli 2010 140,000km driven and had full service history form toyota dealer since day 1 and had been driven in toyota 20W-50 since day 1, it was quite lethargic and not as good fuel economy as out precious corolla, poured mobil 1 5W-50 and it was much improved with no oil consumption at all even though shopkeeper warned not to do it, i used 5W-50 which is thick, on second changed changed to mobil 1 0W-40 and has stuck with it since then and no oil consumption or smoke or noise problems part from a little more ticking heard from the vvti variation.

the point is if the engine is in good health and has had regular oil changes and seals are good then changing form mineral to synthetic causes no problems what soever, if previously mineral oil has been used and not changed on time and not original oil filter has been used and there is presence of sludge then obviously syntethic is gonna clean all that and cause oil consumtion issues etc.

so regardless of how much driven or what oil previously used if new oil is of good standard and previously maintainece hasn't been skipped it will cause no problems
If everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane!

I know bro but some cars are prone to oil burning if you change the oil brands and grades, oil is not a thing to experiment. If it was me and i had driven the car for 140k km on 20W50 then i would never change it to such thin oils like 0W40 my altis 1zz-fe burns 1-1.5L after 5000km Mobil 1 5W30. But it was driven on 10W40 for 50k kms then 5W30

Well I will shift to a more viscous oil on the next change. But still I will observe the performance of hx7 till 5000 kms. What if the oil level doesnt drop??? Should I carry on with hx7 or shift to a viscous oil. I have shortlisted to some options:
    1. Zic A 10w40 semi synthetic
    2. castrol magnatec 10w40 semi synthetic
    3. shell helix hx5 10w40 mineral
    4. caltex havoline formula 10w30 mineral

Please do not advise for any other options. I need the best oil from the above mentioned oils only. I am seeking max fuel economy and minimum wear and tear
