I don't remember exactly but in 2nd stage VTEC the manifold design is different and at wide open throttle a butterfly valve is opened to allow more air in ecu code @Sha2eb can help

About compression test its not available at scrapyard you would have to take a compression tester with you to check engine health

Check for rust in block, valve functioning, wirring, ecu etc

    D15b Single vtec
Vtec switchover at 4.2k rpms. Engine runs on all 16 valves under 4.2k rpm and moves into hi cam when vtec kicks in)
Ecu code is p08 for the manual gearbox
    Wiring would be obd1

    D15b dual vtec
Engine runs on 12 valves under 3k rpms.
At 3k rpm, first vtec kicks in engaging all 16 valves to work.
At 6k rpm second vtec kicks in and the engine moves into hi cam.
Ecu code is p2j003 for the manual gearbox
    Wiring is obd2b

    Both good engines.

Dual vtec is more economical though. Think about 12 to 13kms per litre in city driving

    Correction for dual vtec: Wiring is obd2a (ecu: p2j-003) for 1996-1998 EK3, while obd2b (ecu: p2j-j11) for 1999-2000 EK3.

dual vtec is award wining engine in terms of economy (back when it came)
keeping in mind you use the correct wiring and ecu

in pk, we use wiring of some engine, ecu of some other, block with base of 1 and head of some other code
Life is short and very unpredictable just like a Quarter mile .....

The ECU and wiring will most likely come with the engine. Only buy engine if you are getting the wiring and ecu with it. Otherwise dont buy. Since you will be putting it into the 2000 Civic, you might not need the wiring, but it depends which version of the engine you are buying and whether its ECU is obd2a or obd2b. The difference in both is that there are 4 slots on the ECU where wiring plugs are inserted. In obd2a, Slots 1, 2 & 3 (also referred to as A, B, & D) are used, whereas in obd2b, slots 1, 2 & 3 (A, B, & C) are used. So verify the ECU when buying the engine.

P2J-003/J11 are manual transmission ECUs, whereas most D15b engines that are available here will be CVT (automatic). So the ECU that will come with it will have code P2J-J61 (or J62).

I doubt if you will find engine with manual transmission and matching ECU.

    u r right

dual stage vtec fits in grip to grip with the local wiring we get with d16y8

most people with blown engines swap the block as it fits grip to grip
but since they dont change the ecu, the dual stage vtec never functions
Life is short and very unpredictable just like a Quarter mile .....

It is always preferred to pay the extra buck and get a complete engine with the uncut wiring and ecu. Its a pain to try to resolve that nasty check engine light when you get the setup in parts
